18 Ueryly veryly I say vnto thee, when thou wast young, thou gyrdedst thy selfe, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be olde, thou shalt stretch foorth thy handes, and another shall gyrde thee, and leade thee whither thou wouldest not. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”
19 That spake he, signifiyng by what death he should glorifie God. And whe he had spoken this, he sayth vnto hym, folowe me. (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
20 Peter turned about, and sawe the disciple, whom Iesus loued, folowyng, which also leaned on his brest at supper, and sayde, Lorde which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)
21 When Peter therfore sawe hym, he sayth to Iesus: Lorde, what shal he do? When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Iesus sayth vnto hym: If I wyll haue hym to tary tyll I come, what is that to thee? folowe thou me. Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
23 Then went this saying abrode among the brethren, that that disciple shoulde not dye: Yet Iesus sayde not to hym, he shall not dye: but, yf I wyll that he tary tyll I come, what is that to thee? So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”
24 The same disciple is he, which testifieth of these thynges, and wrote these thynges: And we knowe that his testimonie is true. This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.
25 There are also many other thynges, whiche Iesus dyd, the which, yf they shoulde be written euery one, I suppose the world could not conteine the bookes that shoulde be written. Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
