1 THEN Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 If I venture to speak with you, will you be wearied? But who can restrain himself from speaking with you? “If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? Yet who can keep from speaking? “If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands.
4 Your words have upheld the weak, and you have strengthened the feeble knees. Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees. Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.
5 But now because misfortune has come upon you, and you are weary; it touches you, and you are terrified. But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed. But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed.
6 Behold, your fear is to be blamed, and your trust in the integrity of your way. Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope?
7 Remember, I pray you, whoever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright ever put to shame? “Remember: who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? “Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?
8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble, reap the same. As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the young lion are silenced, and the teeth of the lions are broken. The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions are broken. The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.
11 The lion perishes for the lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered. The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and my ear received a little of it. “Now a word was brought to me stealthily; my ear received the whisper of it. “A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it.
13 In silence, in a night vision, when deep sleep falls on men, Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people,
14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.
15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up: A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up. A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.
16 Then I arose, but I could not discern its meaning; there was no form before my eyes, but I heard a gentle voice, saying, It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice: It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:
17 Shall mortal man be declared more righteous than God? Shall he be more pure than his Maker? ‘Can mortal man be in the right before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?
18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his messengers he struck with amazement; Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error; If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error,
19 Even those who dwell in decorated houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, shall be humbled before the thick darkness. how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like the moth. how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth!
20 They shall be afflicted from morning to evening, that they may not dwell for ever; yea, they shall perish. Between morning and evening they are beaten to pieces; they perish forever without anyone regarding it. Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.
21 Behold, their possessions are taken away from them; and the rest of them shall die without wisdom. Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?’ Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
