1 The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.
2 to whom the word of YHWH came in the days of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reigning. to whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. The word of the LORD came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah,
3 And it came to pass in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, until the completion of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, until the exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month. It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, and until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the captivity of Jerusalem in the fifth month. and through the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, down to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.
4 And the word of YHWH came to me saying, Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, The word of the LORD came to me, saying,
5 “Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you; and before you came forth from the womb I consecrated you, and I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
6 And I said, “Ah, Lord YHWH! Behold, I have not known to speak, for I am a youth.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” “Alas, Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”
7 And YHWH said to me, “Do not say ‘I am a youth.’ For you shall go to all to whom I shall send you, and all that I command you, you shall speak. But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.
8 “Do not be afraid of their faces; for I am with you to deliver you,” a declaration of YHWH. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD.” Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD.
9 And YHWH stretched out His hand and touched my mouth. And YHWH said to me “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the LORD said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.
10 See, I have set you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, to uproot and to tear down, and to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant.” See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”
11 And the word of YHWH came to me saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see an almond branch.” The word of the LORD came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?” “I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.
12 And YHWH said to me, “You have seen well;” “For I am watching over My word to do it.” Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.” The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
13 And the word of YHWH came to me a second time saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot; and its face is away from the face of the north.” The word of the LORD came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north.” The word of the LORD came to me again: “What do you see?” “I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”
14 And YHWH said to me, “From the north evil shall break forth over all those dwelling in the land. Then the LORD said to me, “Out of the north disaster shall be let loose upon all the inhabitants of the land. The LORD said to me, “From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land.
15 For, behold, I am calling all the families of the kingdoms of the north,” a declaration of YHWH, “And they shall come, and set each man his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls round about, and against all the cities of Judah. For behold, I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the LORD, and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah. I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the LORD. “Their kings will come and set up their thrones in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem; they will come against all her surrounding walls and against all the towns of Judah.
16 And I will speak My judgments against them over all their wickedness, because they have forsaken Me and have burned incense to other gods, and bowed down to the works of their own hands. And I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil in forsaking me. They have made offerings to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands. I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping what their hands have made.
17 And you must gird your loins, and stand up, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed before their faces, lest I dismay you before their faces! But you, dress yourself for work; arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them.
18 And behold, for I have made you this day as a fortified city, and as a pillar of iron, and as walls of bronze against all the land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land. And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land.
19 And they will fight against you, and they shall not prevail against you; for I am with you to deliver you,” a declaration of YHWH. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the LORD, to deliver you.” They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD.
