1 BEHOLD my servant, I will uphold him: my elect, my soul delighteth in him: I have given my spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.
2 He shall not cry, nor have respect to person, neither shall his voice be heard abroad. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.
3 The bruised reed he shall not break, and smoking flax he shall not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
4 He shall not be sad, nor troublesome, till he set judgment in the earth: and the islands shall wait for his law. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”
5 Thus saith the Lord God that created the heavens, and stretched them out: that established the earth, and the things that spring out of it: that giveth breath to the people upon it, and spirit to them that tread thereon. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: This is what God the LORD says— the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it:
6 I the Lord have called thee in justice, and taken thee by the hand, and preserved thee. And I have given thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles: “I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, “I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles,
7 That thou mightest open the eyes of the blind, and bring forth the prisoner out of prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
8 I the Lord, this is my name: I will not give my glory to another, nor my praise to graven things. I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. “I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.
9 The things that were first, behold they are come: and new things do I declare: before they spring forth, I will make you head them. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.” See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.”
10 Sing ye to the Lora a new song, his praise is from the ends of the earth: you that go down to the sea, and all that are therein: ye islands, and ye inhabitants of them. Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants. Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them.
11 Let the desert and the cities thereof be exalted: Cedar shall dwell in houses: ye inhabitants of Petra, give praise, they shall cry from the top of the mountains. Let the desert and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits; let the habitants of Sela sing for joy, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops.
12 They shall give glory to the Lord, and shall declare his praise in the islands. Let them give glory to the LORD, and declare his praise in the coastlands. Let them give glory to the LORD and proclaim his praise in the islands.
13 The Lord shall go forth as a mighty man, as a man of war shall he stir up zeal: he shall shout and cry: he shall prevail against his enemies. The LORD goes out like a mighty man, like a man of war he stirs up his zeal; he cries out, he shouts aloud, he shows himself mighty against his foes. The LORD will march out like a champion, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.
14 I have always held my peace, I have I kept silence, I have been patient, I will speak now as a woman in labour: I will destroy, and swallow up at once. For a long time I have held my peace; I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor; I will gasp and pant. “For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.
15 I will lay waste the mountains and hills, and will make all their grass to wither: and I will turn rivers into islands, and will dry up the standing pools. I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn the rivers into islands, and dry up the pools. I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands and dry up the pools.
16 And I will lead the blind into the way which they know not: and in the paths which they were ignorant of I will make them walk: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight: these things have I done to them, and have not forsaken them. And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them. I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.
17 They are turned back: let them be greatly confounded, that trust in a graven thing, that say to a molten thing: You are our god. They are turned back and utterly put to shame, who trust in carved idols, who say to metal images, “You are our gods.” But those who trust in idols, who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’ will be turned back in utter shame.
18 Hear, ye deaf, and, ye blind, behold that you may see. Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see! “Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, and see!
19 Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, but he to whom I have sent my messengers? Who is blind, but he that is sold? or who is blind, but the servant of the Lord? Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the LORD? Who is blind but my servant, and deaf like the messenger I send? Who is blind like the one in covenant with me, blind like the servant of the LORD?
20 20. Thou that seest many things, wilt thou not observe them? thou that hast ears open, wilt thou not hear? He sees many things, but does not observe them; his ears are open, but he does not hear. You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.”
21 And the Lord was willing to sanctify him, and to magnify the law, and exalt it. The LORD was pleased, for his righteousness’ sake, to magnify his law and make it glorious. It pleased the LORD for the sake of his righteousness to make his law great and glorious.
22 But this is a people that is robbed and wasted: they are all the snare of young men, and they are hid in the houses of prisons: they are made a prey, and there is none to deliver them: a spoil, and there is none that saith: Restore. But this is a people plundered and looted; they are all of them trapped in holes and hidden in prisons; they have become plunder with none to rescue, spoil with none to say, “Restore!” But this is a people plundered and looted, all of them trapped in pits or hidden away in prisons. They have become plunder, with no one to rescue them; they have been made loot, with no one to say, “Send them back.”
23 Who is there among you that will give ear to this, that will attend and hearken for times to come? Who among you will give ear to this, will attend and listen for the time to come? Which of you will listen to this or pay close attention in time to come?
24 Who hath given Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to robbers? hath not the Lord himself, against whom we have sinned? And they would not walk in his ways, and they have not hearkened to his law. Who gave up Jacob to the looter, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned, in whose ways they would not walk, and whose law they would not obey? Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned? For they would not follow his ways; they did not obey his law.
25 And he hath poured out upon him the indignation of his fury, and a strong battle, and hath burnt him round about, and he knew not: and set him on fire, and he understood not. So he poured on him the heat of his anger and the might of battle; it set him on fire all around, but he did not understand; it burned him up, but he did not take it to heart. So he poured out on them his burning anger, the violence of war. It enveloped them in flames, yet they did not understand; it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.
