1 Ephraim feeds on wind, and chases the east wind. He continually multiplies lies and desolation. They make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt. 2 Yahweh also has a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his deeds he will repay him. The LORD has an indictment against Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways; he will repay him according to his deeds. The LORD has a charge to bring against Judah; he will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his manhood he contended with God. In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his manhood he strove with God. In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel; as a man he struggled with God.
4 Indeed, he struggled with the angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication to him. 5 even Yahweh, the God of Armies. Yahweh is his name of renown! the LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD is his memorial name: the LORD God Almighty, the LORD is his name!
6 Therefore turn to your God. Keep kindness and justice, and wait continually for your God. “So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.” But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always.
7 A merchant has dishonest scales in his hand. He loves to defraud. A merchant, in whose hands are false balances, he loves to oppress. The merchant uses dishonest scales and loves to defraud.
8 Ephraim said, “Surely I have become rich. I have found myself wealth. In all my wealth they won’t find in me any iniquity that is sin.” Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich; I have found wealth for myself; in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.” Ephraim boasts, “I am very rich; I have become wealthy. With all my wealth they will not find in me any iniquity or sin.”
9 “But I am Yahweh your God from the land of Egypt. I will yet again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feast. I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt; I will again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast. “I have been the LORD your God ever since you came out of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again, as in the days of your appointed festivals.
10 I have also spoken to the prophets, and I have multiplied visions; and by the ministry of the prophets I have used parables. I spoke to the prophets; it was I who multiplied visions, and through the prophets gave parables. I spoke to the prophets, gave them many visions and told parables through them.”
11 If Gilead is wicked, surely they are worthless. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls. Indeed, their altars are like heaps in the furrows of the field. If there is iniquity in Gilead, they shall surely come to nothing: in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls; their altars also are like stone heaps on the furrows of the field. Is Gilead wicked? Its people are worthless! Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Their altars will be like piles of stones on a plowed field.
12 Jacob fled into the country of Aram. Israel served to get a wife. For a wife he tended flocks and herds. Jacob fled to the land of Aram; there Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he guarded sheep. Jacob fled to the country of Aram; Israel served to get a wife, and to pay for her he tended sheep.
13 By a prophet Yahweh brought Israel up out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved. By a prophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet he was guarded. The LORD used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt, by a prophet he cared for him.
14 Ephraim has bitterly provoked anger. Therefore his blood will be left on him, and his Lord will repay his contempt. Ephraim has given bitter provocation; so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds. But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger; his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed and will repay him for his contempt.
