1 In the seventh month, on the twenty-first of the month, the word of YHWH came by the hand Haggai the prophet, saying, In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
2 “Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying: “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them,
3 ‘Who is remaining among you⁺ that saw this house in its former glory? And how are you⁺ seeing it now? Is it not in comparison as nothing in your⁺ eyes?’ ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?
4 And now be strong, O Zerubbabel, a declaration of YHWH, and be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land, a declaration of YHWH, and work. For I am with you⁺, a declaration of YHWH of Hosts, Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
5 the word that I cut with you⁺ at your⁺ coming forth from Egypt, and My Spirit is standing in your⁺ midst. Do not be afraid!” according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
6 For thus says YHWH of Hosts: “Once more, it is a little while, and I will be shaking the heavens and the earth, and the sea and the dry land. For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
7 And I will shake all the nations, and they will come with the treasure of all the nations, and I will fill this house with glory, says YHWH of Hosts. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the LORD Almighty.
8 Unto Me is the silver, and unto Me the gold, a declaration of YHWH of Hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts. The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
9 Greater will be the glory of this latter house than the former, says YHWH of Hosts, and in this place I will give peace, a declaration of YHWH of Hosts.” The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.’” The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
10 On the twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of YHWH came to Haggai the prophet, saying: On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai:
11 “Thus says YHWH of Hosts: ‘Ask now the priests about the law, saying, “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law: “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests what the law says:
12 behold, if a man should carry holy flesh in the fold of his garment, and he touches with his fold against bread, or stew, or wine, or oil, or any food, will it become holy?’” And the priests answered and said, “No.” ‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?’” The priests answered and said, “No.” If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?’” The priests answered, “No.”
13 And Haggai said, “If one unclean by a dead body touches any of these things, will it be unclean?” And the priests answered and said, “It will be unclean.” Then Haggai said, “If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean.” Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?” “Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.”
14 And Haggai answered and said, “Thus is this people, and thus is this nation before My face, a declaration of YHWH, and thus is every work of their hands, and what they offer there, it is unclean. Then Haggai answered and said, “So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the LORD, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean. Then Haggai said, “’So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,’ declares the LORD. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.
15 And now, set, please, your⁺ heart from this day and onward: From before a stone was placed upon a stone in the house of YHWH, Now then, consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the LORD, “’Now give careful thought to this from this day on —consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the LORD’s temple.
16 From their being, when one came toward a heap of twenty, then there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty from the press, then there were but twenty. how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.
17 I struck you⁺ with the blight and with mildew and with hail, all the work of your⁺ hands, and you⁺ were not with Me, a declaration of YHWH. I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD. I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,’ declares the LORD.
18 Set now your⁺ heart from this day and onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day that the temple of YHWH was founded—set your⁺ heart! Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid, consider: From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid. Give careful thought:
19 Is the seed still in the barn? Until now the vine and the fig tree and the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne; from this day I will bless.” Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.” Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. “’From this day on I will bless you.’”
20 And the word of YHWH came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth of the month, saying, The word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth; “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
22 and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and those riding them, and the horses and their riders will come down, each man by the sword of his brother. and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother. I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
23 On that day, a declaration of YHWH of Hosts, I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant, a declaration of YHWH, and will set you as a signet ring, for I have chosen you, a declaration of YHWH of Hosts.” On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.” “’On that day,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
