In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of YHWH came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying: | In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: | In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest: |
Thus speaks YHWH of Hosts, saying: “This people says, ‘The time has not come, the time for the house of YHWH to be built.’” | “Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.” | This is what the LORD Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD’s house.’” |
And the word came of YHWH by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying: | Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, | Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: |
“Is it time for you⁺ yourselves to dwell in your⁺ paneled houses, and this house is desolate?” | “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? | “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” |
And now, thus says YHWH of Hosts: “Set your⁺ heart upon your⁺ ways. | Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. | Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. |
You⁺ have sown much, and you have brought in little; you eat, and not to satisfaction; you drink, and not to drunkenness; One wears clothes, and there is no warmth to it; and the wage earner earns wages into a bag pierced through.” | You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. | You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” |
Thus says YHWH of Hosts: “Set your⁺ heart upon your⁺ ways. | “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. | This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. |
Go up to the mountains, and bring wood, and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified, says YHWH. | Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD. | Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD. |
You turned for much, and behold, little; and you⁺ brought it home, and I blew it away. Because of what? An utterance of YHWH of Hosts, because of My house, the way that it is in ruins, while you⁺ are running, each man to his house. | You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. | “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the LORD Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. |
Upon thus, the heavens above you⁺ withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. | Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. | Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. |
And I have called for a drought on the land, and on the mountains, and on the grain and on the new wine and on the oil, and on whatever the ground brings forth, and on mankind and on the livestock, and on all the labor of the hands.” | And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.” | I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.” |
And Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, along with all the remnant of the people, listened to the voice of YHWH their God and to the words of Haggai the prophet, because YHWH their God had sent him; and the people were afraid before the face of YHWH. | Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. | Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. |
And Haggai the messenger of YHWH spoke the message of YHWH to the people, saying: “I am with you⁺,” a declaration of YHWH. | Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.” | Then Haggai, the LORD’s messenger, gave this message of the LORD to the people: “I am with you,” declares the LORD. |
| 14 | And YHWH stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work on the house of YHWH of Hosts, their God, | And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, | So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people.
