1 And it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Behold, I am here.” After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
2 And He said, “Take now your son, your only one, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell to you.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”
3 And Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and he took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and he arose and went to the place of which God had told to him. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
4 And on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and he saw the place from a distance. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
5 And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the boy will go over there, and we will worship, and we will come back to you⁺.” Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife, and they went, the two of them, together. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,
7 And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Behold, I am here, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, and where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8 And Abraham said, “God will see for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” And they went, the two of them, together. Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
9 And they came to the place that God had told him, and there Abraham built the altar and arranged the wood, and he bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of YHWH called to him from the heavens and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Behold, I am here.” But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
12 And he said, “Do not stretch out your hand upon the boy, and do not do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only one, from me.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a ram behind him, caught in the thicket by its horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place “YHWH Yireh,” as it is said to this day, “On the mountain of YHWH it shall be seen.” So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
15 And the angel of YHWH called to Abraham a second time from the heavens And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time
16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn, says YHWH, that because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only one, and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, and said, “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 that I will surely bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the shore of the sea; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
18 And in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have listened to My voice.” and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
19 And Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham dwelt at Beersheba. So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
20 And it came to pass after these things that it was told to Abraham, saying, “Behold, Milcah has borne—even she—sons to Nahor your brother: Now after these things it was told to Abraham, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:
21 Uz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
22 and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.”
23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. (Bethuel fathered Rebekah.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.
24 And his concubine (and her name was Reumah), she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah. Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
