1 Stand fast therefore, and be not hampered again with the yoke of bondage. For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
2 take notice, 'tis I Paul declare it to you, that if you are circumcised, Christ shall be of no advantage to you. Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.
3 for I testify to every man that is circumcised, that he is under an obligation to perform the whole law. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
4 Christ is of no use to you, whoever of you seek to be justified by the law; you have lost all interest in the gospel-dispensation. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
5 but as for us, our minds are possessed with the hopes of justification by faith. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.
6 for in the christian-dispensation, neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision, but an active benevolent faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
7 You set out well in your course: who hath obstructed your progress in the truth? You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?
8 this opinionativeness does not come from him that called you. This persuasion is not from him who calls you. That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.
9 a little leaven affects the whole mass. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.”
10 I have confidence in you, that, through the Lord, you will be of the same mind with me, so that he who troubles you shall fall under the censure he deserves, whoever he be. I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty.
11 as for me, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why am I yet persecuted? for then there would not be so much objection to the doctrine of the cross. But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
12 I wish they who unsettle you were entirely circumcised. I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves! As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!
13 for, brethren, you have been called to liberty, only abuse not this freedom as a pretext to vice, but in offices of love be as servants one to another. For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
14 for all the law is comprehended in this one precept, "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
15 but if you bite and tear one another, take heed that you be not consumed by one another. But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
16 I say then, conduct yourselves by the spirit, and you will not then gratify the animal passions. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
17 for the vicious desires are contrary to those of the spirit, and the inclinations of the spirit are contrary to those of the animal part; these are opposite to each other, so that you do not the things that you would. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
18 but if you are governed by the spirit, you are not subject to the law. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 now the effects of vicious passions are manifestly these, fornication, uncleanness, Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
20 brutality, idolatry, poisoning, enmities, quarrels, emulations, animosities, strife, seditions, factions, envyings, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
21 drunkenness, revellings, and such like, concerning which I forewarn you now, as heretofore I have done, that they who practise such vices, shall not inherit the kingdom of God. envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, sweetness of disposition, beneficence, faithfulness, meekness, temperance: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 against such there is no law. gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 now they who belong to Christ, have crucified the animal nature with the affections and passions thereof. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 if we live by the spirit, let us regulate our actions by the spirit: If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
26 let us not be vain-glorious, provoking one another, envying one another. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
