1 Throughout that night the king was unable to sleep, so he asked for the book containing the historical records to be brought. As the records were being read in the king's presence, On that night the king could not sleep. And he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.
2 it was found written that Mordecai had disclosed that Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the entrance, had plotted to assassinate King Ahasuerus. And it was found written how Mordecai had told about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
3 The king asked, |What great honor was bestowed on Mordecai because of this?| The king's attendants who served him responded, |Not a thing was done for him.| And the king said, “What honor or distinction has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” The king’s young men who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.” “What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?” the king asked. “Nothing has been done for him,” his attendants answered.
4 Then the king said, |Who is that in the courtyard?| Now Haman had come to the outer courtyard of the palace to suggest that the king hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had constructed for him. And the king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king’s palace to speak to the king about having Mordecai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for him. The king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to speak to the king about impaling Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.
5 The king's attendants said to him, |It is Haman who is standing in the courtyard.| The king said, |Let him enter.| And the king’s young men told him, “Haman is there, standing in the court.” And the king said, “Let him come in.” His attendants answered, “Haman is standing in the court.” “Bring him in,” the king ordered.
6 So Haman came in, and the king said to him, |What should be done for the man whom the king wishes to honor?| Haman thought to himself, |Who is it that the king would want to honor more than me?| So Haman came in, and the king said to him, “What should be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?” And Haman said to himself, “Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?” When Haman entered, the king asked him, “What should be done for the man the king delights to honor?” Now Haman thought to himself, “Who is there that the king would rather honor than me?”
7 So Haman said to the king, |For the man whom the king wishes to honor, And Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor, So he answered the king, “For the man the king delights to honor,
8 let them bring royal attire which the king himself has worn and a horse on which the king himself has ridden--one bearing the royal insignia! let royal robes be brought, which the king has worn, and the horse that the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown is set. have them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, one with a royal crest placed on its head.
9 Then let this clothing and this horse be given to one of the king's noble officials. Let him then clothe the man whom the king wishes to honor, and let him lead him about through the plaza of the city on the horse, calling before him, 'So shall it be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor!'| And let the robes and the horse be handed over to one of the king’s most noble officials. Let them dress the man whom the king delights to honor, and let them lead him on the horse through the square of the city, proclaiming before him: ‘Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.’” Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them robe the man the king delights to honor, and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!’”
10 The king then said to Haman, |Go quickly! Take the clothing and the horse, just as you have described, and do as you just indicated to Mordecai the Jew who sits at the king's gate. Don't neglect a single thing of all that you have said.| Then the king said to Haman, “Hurry; take the robes and the horse, as you have said, and do so to Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Leave out nothing that you have mentioned.” “Go at once,” the king commanded Haman. “Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything you have recommended.”
11 So Haman took the clothing and the horse, and he clothed Mordecai. He led him about on the horse throughout the plaza of the city, calling before him, |So shall it be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor!| So Haman took the robes and the horse, and he dressed Mordecai and led him through the square of the city, proclaiming before him, “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.” So Haman got the robe and the horse. He robed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!”
12 Then Mordecai again sat at the king's gate, while Haman hurried away to his home, mournful and with a veil over his head. Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered. Afterward Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief,
13 Haman then related to his wife Zeresh and to all his friends everything that had happened to him. These wise men, along with his wife Zeresh, said to him, |If indeed this Mordecai before whom you have begun to fall is Jewish, you will not prevail against him. No, you will surely fall before him!| And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not overcome him but will surely fall before him.” and told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him—you will surely come to ruin!”
14 While they were still speaking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived. They quickly brought Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared. While they were yet talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried to bring Haman to the feast that Esther had prepared. While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.
