1 On that night, the sleep of the king fled away, and he said to bring the Book of the Records of Events of the Days, and they were called out before the face of the king. On that night the king could not sleep. And he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.
2 And it was found written that Mordecai had declared concerning Bigthan and Teresh, two eunuchs of the king, from the keepers of the threshold, who sought to stretch out a hand against King Ahasuerus. And it was found written how Mordecai had told about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
3 And the king said, “What honor and greatness has been done for Mordecai over this?” And the young men of the king who attended him said, “Not a thing has been done with him.” And the king said, “What honor or distinction has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” The king’s young men who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.” “What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?” the king asked. “Nothing has been done for him,” his attendants answered.
4 And the king said, “Who is in the court?” And Haman had come into the outer court of the house of the king to say to the king to hang Mordecai on the tree that he had prepared for him. And the king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king’s palace to speak to the king about having Mordecai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for him. The king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to speak to the king about impaling Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.
5 And the young men of the king said to him, “Behold, Haman is standing in the court.” And the king said, “Let him come in.” And the king’s young men told him, “Haman is there, standing in the court.” And the king said, “Let him come in.” His attendants answered, “Haman is standing in the court.” “Bring him in,” the king ordered.
6 And Haman came in, and the king said to him, “What is to be done for the man whom the king delights to honor?” And Haman said in his heart, “For whom would the king delight to do honor more than me?” So Haman came in, and the king said to him, “What should be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?” And Haman said to himself, “Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?” When Haman entered, the king asked him, “What should be done for the man the king delights to honor?” Now Haman thought to himself, “Who is there that the king would rather honor than me?”
7 And Haman said to the king, “The man whom the king delights to honor, And Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor, So he answered the king, “For the man the king delights to honor,
8 let them bring a garment of royalty that the king has clothed himself, and a horse that the king has ridden upon it, and that a crown of royalty has been given on its head, let royal robes be brought, which the king has worn, and the horse that the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown is set. have them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, one with a royal crest placed on its head.
9 And let the garment and the horse be given upon the hand of a man from officials of the king, the nobles, and let them clothe the man whom the king delights to honor, and have him ride on the horse in the open square of the city, and let them call out before his face, ‘Thus shall it be done for the man whom the king delights to honor.’” And let the robes and the horse be handed over to one of the king’s most noble officials. Let them dress the man whom the king delights to honor, and let them lead him on the horse through the square of the city, proclaiming before him: ‘Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.’” Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them robe the man the king delights to honor, and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!’”
10 And the king said to Haman, “Hurry, take the garment and the horse, as you have spoken, and do so for Mordecai the Jew, the one sitting at the gate of the king. You shall not let fall a word from all that you have spoken.” Then the king said to Haman, “Hurry; take the robes and the horse, as you have said, and do so to Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Leave out nothing that you have mentioned.” “Go at once,” the king commanded Haman. “Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything you have recommended.”
11 And Haman took the garment and the horse, and he clothed Mordecai, and he led him in the open square of the city, and he called out before his face, “Thus shall it be done from the man whom the king delights to honor!” So Haman took the robes and the horse, and he dressed Mordecai and led him through the square of the city, proclaiming before him, “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.” So Haman got the robe and the horse. He robed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!”
12 And Mordecai returned to the gate of the king, and Haman hurried to his house, mourning and covered his head. Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered. Afterward Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief,
13 And Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and to all his loved ones all that had happened to him. And his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, “If Mordecai is from the seed of the Jews, whom you have begun to fall before his face, you will not prevail against him, but you will surely fall before his face.” And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not overcome him but will surely fall before him.” and told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him—you will surely come to ruin!”
14 They were still speaking with him, and the eunuchs of the king arrived, and they hastened to bring Haman to the feast that Esther had made. While they were yet talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried to bring Haman to the feast that Esther had prepared. While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.
