And Daniel set upon his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king, nor with the wine of his banquets; therefore he sought from the chief of the eunuchs that he would not defile himself. | But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. | But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. |
And God gave Daniel for kindness and compassion before the chief of the eunuchs. | And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, | Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, |
And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel: “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your⁺ food and your⁺ drink; for why should he see your⁺ faces sadder than the young men who are your⁺ age? And you⁺ would endanger my head before the king.” | and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king.” | but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.” |
And Daniel said to the guardian, whom the chief of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, | Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, | Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, |
“Test, please, your servants ten days, and let them give to us from the vegetables only to eat, and water only to drink. | “Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. | “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. |
And let our appearance be seen before you, and the appearance of the young men that are eating the portion of the king, and according to what you see, deal with your servants.” | Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king’s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” | Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” |
And he listened to them, to this word, and he tested them ten days. | So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. | So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. |
And at the end of ten days, their appearance was seen better and fatter in flesh than all the young men eating the portion of the king. | At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food. | At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. |
And it came to pass that the steward took away their portions, and the wine for their drinking, and gave to them vegetables. | So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables. | So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead. |
