1 Now about that time Herod the king put forth his bands to harm some of the assembly. About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.
2 And he slew James, the brother of John, with the sword; He killed James the brother of John with the sword, He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.
3 and, seeing that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. And then were the days of unleavened bread. and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.
4 And, having seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him; intending, after the passover, to bring him up to the people. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.
5 Peter, therefore, was kept in the prison; but prayer was being earnestly made by the assembly to God in his behalf. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
6 And, when Herod was about to bring him forth, in that night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains; and guards before the door were keeping the prison. Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.
7 And, behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him , and a light shined in the cell; and, smiting the side of Peter, he raised him up, saying, "Rise up quickly!" And his chains fell off from his hands. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.
8 And the angel said to him, "Gird yourself, and bind on your sandals." And he did so. And he says to him, "Cast your garment around you, and follow me." And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him.
9 And, going forth, he was following him ; and he knew not that it was true, which was being done by the angel, but was thinking that he saw a vision. And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.
10 And, having passed the first and second watch; they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and, going out, they passed on through one street, and straightway the angel departed from him. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
11 And Peter, having come to himself, said, "Now I know truly that the Lord sent forth His angel, and delivered me out of Herod's hand, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 And, having considered it , he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is surnamed Mark; where many were gathered together and were praying. When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.
13 And, when he knocked at the door of the gate, a maid came near to answer, Rhoda by name. And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.
14 And, recognizing the voice of Peter, she opened not the gate for joy; but, running in, she told them that Peter was standing before the gate. Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 And they said to her, "You are mad!" But she kept confidently affirming that it was so. And they said, "It is his angel" They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
16 But Peter continued knocking; and, opening, they saw him, and were amazed. But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.
17 But, beckoning to them with his hand to be silent, he declared to them, how the Lord brought him forth out of the prison. And he Said, "Declare these things to James, and to the brethren." And, going forth, he went to another place. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place. Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
18 And, when it became day, there was no small commotion among the soldiers, as to what, consequently, became of Peter. Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.
19 And Herod, having sought for him, and not finding him , having examined the guards, ordered that they be led away to death . And, going down from Judaea to Caesarea, he tarried there . And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there. After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there.
20 Now he was very angry with the Tyrians and Sidonians; and they came with one accord to him; and, having made Blastus, the king's chamberlain, their friend, they asked for peace, because their country was being maintained by that of the king. Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.
21 And, on a set day, Herod, having put on royal apparel, and seating himself on the judgment seat, made a speech to them. On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people.
22 And the people were shouting, " It is the voice of a god, and not of a man!" And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.”
23 And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he did not give God the glory; and, having been eaten by worms, he expired. Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
24 But the word of God was growing, and multiplying. But the word of God increased and multiplied. But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.
25 And Barnabus and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having fulfilled their ministry, taking with them John who was surnamed Mark. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark. When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.
