1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king over Judah. In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah. In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah,
2 Three years he reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and between Jeroboam. He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. Now there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Maakah, a daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
3 And Abijah directed the battle with an army of mighty men of war, four hundred thousand choice men, and Jeroboam drew up against him in battle with eight hundred thousand choice men, mighty men of valor. Abijah went out to battle, having an army of valiant men of war, 400,000 chosen men. And Jeroboam drew up his line of battle against him with 800,000 chosen mighty warriors. Abijah went into battle with an army of four hundred thousand able fighting men, and Jeroboam drew up a battle line against him with eight hundred thousand able troops.
4 And Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and he said, “Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel; Then Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim that is in the hill country of Ephraim and said, “Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel! Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Jeroboam and all Israel, listen to me!
5 is it not for you⁺ to know that YHWH, God of Israel, gave the dominion to David over Israel forever, to him and his sons, by a covenant of salt? Ought you not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel forever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt? Don’t you know that the LORD, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt?
6 And rose up Jeroboam son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon son of David, and he rebelled against his lord. Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord, Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, an official of Solomon son of David, rebelled against his master.
7 And vain men gathered to him, sons of worthlessness, and they strenghtened themselves against Rehoboam son of Solomon. And Rehoboam was young and tender of heart, and he could not strengthen himself against them. and certain worthless scoundrels gathered about him and defied Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and irresolute and could not withstand them. Some worthless scoundrels gathered around him and opposed Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young and indecisive and not strong enough to resist them.
8 And you⁺ are saying to strengthen yourselves before the face of the kingdom of YHWH in the hand of the sons of David, and you⁺ are a great multitude, and with you⁺ are the gold calves that Jeroboam made for you⁺ as gods. “And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods. “And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made to be your gods.
9 Have you⁺ not cast out the priests of YHWH, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of the lands? Everyone comes to consecrate himself with a bull, a son of the herd, and seven rams, and he will be a priest of what are not gods. Have you not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes for ordination with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are not gods. But didn’t you drive out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make priests of your own as the peoples of other lands do? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may become a priest of what are not gods.
10 And as for us, YHWH is our God, and we have not forsaken Him and the priests who minister to YHWH, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, in the work. But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests ministering to the LORD who are sons of Aaron, and Levites for their service. “As for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests who serve the LORD are sons of Aaron, and the Levites assist them.
11 And they burn to YHWH burnt offerings morning by morning and evening by evening, and incense of spices, and the arrangement of bread on the pure gold table, and the lampstand of gold, and its lamps, to burn evening by evening. For we are keeping the charge of YHWH our God, and you⁺ have forsaken Him. They offer to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt offerings and incense of sweet spices, set out the showbread on the table of pure gold, and care for the golden lampstand that its lamps may burn every evening. For we keep the charge of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him. Every morning and evening they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD. They set out the bread on the ceremonially clean table and light the lamps on the gold lampstand every evening. We are observing the requirements of the LORD our God. But you have forsaken him.
12 And behold, with us at head is God, and His priests, and trumpets sounding to shout against you⁺. O sons of Israel, do not fight against YHWH, God of your⁺ fathers, for you shall⁺ not prosper.” Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers, for you cannot succeed.” God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you. People of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”
13 And Jeroboam brought around the ambush to come in behind them, and they were before the face of Judah, and the ambush behind them. Jeroboam had sent an ambush around to come upon them from behind. Thus his troops were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them. Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah the ambush was behind them.
14 And Judah turned, and behold, the battle was before their faces and behind, and they cried out to YHWH, and the priests sounded the trumpets. And when Judah looked, behold, the battle was in front of and behind them. And they cried to the LORD, and the priests blew the trumpets. Judah turned and saw that they were being attacked at both front and rear. Then they cried out to the LORD. The priests blew their trumpets
15 And the men of Judah gave a shout, and it came to pass as the men of Judah shouted, that God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
16 And the sons of Israel fled before the face of Judah, and God delivered them into their hands. The men of Israel fled before Judah, and God gave them into their hand. The Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands.
17 And Abijah and his people struck them with a great slaughter, and they fell slain from Israel five hundred thousand choice men. Abijah and his people struck them with great force, so there fell slain of Israel 500,000 chosen men. Abijah and his troops inflicted heavy losses on them, so that there were five hundred thousand casualties among Israel’s able men.
18 And the sons of Israel were subdued at that time, and the sons of Judah prevailed because they relied on YHWH, God of their fathers. Thus the men of Israel were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers. The Israelites were subdued on that occasion, and the people of Judah were victorious because they relied on the LORD, the God of their ancestors.
19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and he took from him cities: Bethel and its villages, and Jeshanah and its villages, and Ephron and its villages. And Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took cities from him, Bethel with its villages and Jeshanah with its villages and Ephron with its villages. Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him the towns of Bethel, Jeshanah and Ephron, with their surrounding villages.
20 And Jeroboam did not recover power again in the days of Abijah; and YHWH struck him and he died. Jeroboam did not recover his power in the days of Abijah. And the LORD struck him down, and he died. Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the LORD struck him down and he died.
21 And Abijah strengthened himself, and he took to himself fourteen wives, and he begat twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. But Abijah grew mighty. And he took fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. But Abijah grew in strength. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his words, are written in the Treatise of the Prophet Iddo. The rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo. The other events of Abijah’s reign, what he did and what he said, are written in the annotations of the prophet Iddo.
