1 And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthened himself, that he forsook the law of YHWH, and all Israel with him. When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him. After Rehoboam’s position as king was established and he had become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the LORD.
2 And it came to pass in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem—because they had transgressed against YHWH— In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, because they had been unfaithful to the LORD, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem Because they had been unfaithful to the LORD, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem in the fifth year of King Rehoboam.
3 with a thousand and two hundred chariots, and sixty thousand horsemen, and people without number who came with him out of Egypt: Libyans and Sukkites and Cushites. with 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen. And the people were without number who came with him from Egypt—Libyans, Sukkiim, and Ethiopians. With twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen and the innumerable troops of Libyans, Sukkites and Cushites that came with him from Egypt,
4 And he took the fortified cities that were unto Judah, and he came to Jerusalem. And he took the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. he captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem.
5 And Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who were gathered together in Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “Thus says YHWH, ‘You⁺ have forsaken Me; and also I have abandoned you⁺ all into the hand of Shishak.’” Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Thus says the LORD, ‘You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.’” Then the prophet Shemaiah came to Rehoboam and to the leaders of Judah who had assembled in Jerusalem for fear of Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says, ‘You have abandoned me; therefore, I now abandon you to Shishak.’”
6 And the leaders of Israel humbled themselves—and the king—and they said, “Righteous is YHWH.” Then the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is righteous.” The leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is just.”
7 And when YHWH saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of YHWH came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, and I will give to them a little thing for escape, and My wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. When the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: “They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. When the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, this word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: “Since they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy them but will soon give them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.
8 Nevertheless, they will be servants to him, and they will know My service and the service of the kingdoms of the nations. Nevertheless, they shall be servants to him, that they may know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.” They will, however, become subject to him, so that they may learn the difference between serving me and serving the kings of other lands.”
9 And Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and he took away the treasures of the house of YHWH and the treasures of the house of the king. He took everything, and he took the gold shields that Solomon had made. So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. He took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king’s house. He took away everything. He also took away the shields of gold that Solomon had made, When Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem, he carried off the treasures of the temple of the LORD and the treasures of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields Solomon had made.
10 And King Rehoboam made in their place bronze shields, and he committed them over to the hands of the captains of the guards who guarded the doorway of the house of the king. and King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king’s house. So King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and assigned these to the commanders of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.
11 And whenever the king entered the house of YHWH, the guard would go and bring them out; and they would take them back into the chamber of the runners. And as often as the king went into the house of the LORD, the guard came and carried them and brought them back to the guardroom. Whenever the king went to the LORD’s temple, the guards went with him, bearing the shields, and afterward they returned them to the guardroom.
12 And he humbled himself, and the wrath of YHWH turned from him as not to destroy him completely; and also in Judah there were good things. And when he humbled himself the wrath of the LORD turned from him, so as not to make a complete destruction. Moreover, conditions were good in Judah. Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the LORD’s anger turned from him, and he was not totally destroyed. Indeed, there was some good in Judah.
13 And King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and he reigned. For Rehoboam was a son of forty-one years in his reigning, and seventeen years he reigned in Jerusalem, the city that YHWH had chosen to put His name there out of all the tribes of Israel. And the name of his mother was Naamah the Ammonitess. So King Rehoboam grew strong in Jerusalem and reigned. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite. King Rehoboam established himself firmly in Jerusalem and continued as king. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel in which to put his Name. His mother’s name was Naamah; she was an Ammonite.
14 And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek YHWH. And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the LORD. He did evil because he had not set his heart on seeking the LORD.
15 And the acts of Rehoboam, the first and the last, are they not written in the Words of Shemaiah the Prophet and of Iddo the Seer concerning the genealogies? And the wars of Rehoboam and Jeroboam were all their days. Now the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the chronicles of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer? There were continual wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam. As for the events of Rehoboam’s reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer that deal with genealogies? There was continual warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.
16 And Rehoboam rested with his fathers, and he was buried in the City of David. And Abijah his son reigned in his place. And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Abijah his son reigned in his place. Rehoboam rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Abijah his son succeeded him as king.
