Psalm 79
NLT Parallel NET [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNET Bible
O God, pagan nations have conquered your land, your special possession. They have defiled your holy Temple and made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.1A psalm of Asaph. O God, foreigners have invaded your chosen land; they have polluted your holy temple and turned Jerusalem into a heap of ruins.
They have left the bodies of your servants as food for the birds of heaven. The flesh of your godly ones has become food for the wild animals.2They have given the corpses of your servants to the birds of the sky; the flesh of your loyal followers to the beasts of the earth.
Blood has flowed like water all around Jerusalem; no one is left to bury the dead.3They have made their blood flow like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury them.
We are mocked by our neighbors, an object of scorn and derision to those around us.4We have become an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us.
O LORD, how long will you be angry with us? Forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?5How long will this go on, O LORD? Will you stay angry forever? How long will your rage burn like fire?
Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you— on kingdoms that do not call upon your name.6Pour out your anger on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not pray to you!
For they have devoured your people Israel, making the land a desolate wilderness.7For they have devoured Jacob and destroyed his home.
Do not hold us guilty for the sins of our ancestors! Let your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair.8Do not hold us accountable for the sins of earlier generations! Quickly send your compassion our way, for we are in serious trouble!
Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of your name. Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of your name.9Help us, O God, our deliverer! For the sake of your glorious reputation, rescue us! Forgive our sins for the sake of your reputation!
Why should pagan nations be allowed to scoff, asking, “Where is their God?” Show us your vengeance against the nations, for they have spilled the blood of your servants.10Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our very eyes may the shed blood of your servants be avenged among the nations!
Listen to the moaning of the prisoners. Demonstrate your great power by saving those condemned to die.11Listen to the painful cries of the prisoners! Use your great strength to set free those condemned to die!
O Lord, pay back our neighbors seven times for the scorn they have hurled at you.12Pay back our neighbors in full! May they be insulted the same way they insulted you, O Lord!
Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will thank you forever and ever, praising your greatness from generation to generation.13Then we, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will continually thank you. We will tell coming generations of your praiseworthy acts.
