New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. | 1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. |
And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. | 2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. |
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. | 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, |
He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” | 4and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away." |
And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” | 5And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." And He said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true." |
And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. | 6Then He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. |
All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. | 7"He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. |
“But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” | 8"But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." |
Then one of the seven angels who held the seven bowls containing the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come with me! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” | 9Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." |
So he took me in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. | 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, |
It shone with the glory of God and sparkled like a precious stone—like jasper as clear as crystal. | 11having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper. |
The city wall was broad and high, with twelve gates guarded by twelve angels. And the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates. | 12It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. |
There were three gates on each side—east, north, south, and west. | 13There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west. |
The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. | 14And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. |
The angel who talked to me held in his hand a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. | 15The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates and its wall. |
When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles. | 16The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the rod, fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal. |
Then he measured the walls and found them to be 216 feet thick (according to the human standard used by the angel). | 17And he measured its wall, seventy-two yards, according to human measurements, which are also angelic measurements. |
The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass. | 18The material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. |
The wall of the city was built on foundation stones inlaid with twelve precious stones: the first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, | 19The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; |
the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. | 20the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. |
The twelve gates were made of pearls—each gate from a single pearl! And the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass. | 21And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. |
I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. | 22I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. |
And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light. | 23And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. |
The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the world will enter the city in all their glory. | 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. |
Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there. | 25In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed; |
And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city. | 26and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; |
Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. | 27and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. |
