New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. | 1Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. |
So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. | 2Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. |
For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. | 3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: |
The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. | 4For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. |
So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience. | 5Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. |
Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. | 6For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. |
Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority. Love Fulfills God’s Requirements | 7Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. |
Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law. | 8Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. |
For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.” These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” | 9For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. |
Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law. | 10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. |
This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. | 11And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. |
The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. | 12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. |
Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. | 13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. |
Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires. | 14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. |
