New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit and a heavy chain in his hand. | 1And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. |
He seized the dragon—that old serpent, who is the devil, Satan—and bound him in chains for a thousand years. | 2And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, |
The angel threw him into the bottomless pit, which he then shut and locked so Satan could not deceive the nations anymore until the thousand years were finished. Afterward he must be released for a little while. | 3And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. |
Then I saw thrones, and the people sitting on them had been given the authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for proclaiming the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his statue, nor accepted his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They all came to life again, and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years. | 4And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. |
This is the first resurrection. (The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years had ended.) | 5But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. |
Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years. The Defeat of Satan | 6Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. |
When the thousand years come to an end, Satan will be let out of his prison. | 7And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, |
He will go out to deceive the nations—called Gog and Magog—in every corner of the earth. He will gather them together for battle—a mighty army, as numberless as sand along the seashore. | 8And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. |
And I saw them as they went up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded God’s people and the beloved city. But fire from heaven came down on the attacking armies and consumed them. | 9And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. |
Then the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. The Final Judgment | 10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. |
And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. | 11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. |
I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. | 12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. |
The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. | 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. |
Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. | 14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. |
And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire. | 15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. |
