This is the family line of Aaron and Moses as it was recorded when the LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai:1This is a record of the genealogies of Aaron and Moses current as of the day on which the LORD addressed Moses on Mount Sinai.
The names of Aaron’s sons were Nadab (the oldest), Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.2The sons of Aaron were Nadab the first-born, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar
These sons of Aaron were anointed and ordained to minister as priests.3who were anointed priests and whom he consecrated as priests.
But Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD’s presence in the wilderness of Sinai when they burned before the LORD the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded. Since they had no sons, this left only Eleazar and Ithamar to serve as priests with their father, Aaron.4Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they offered unauthorized fire before him in the Sinai wilderness. Since they didn't have their own children, Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priest under the authority of Aaron their father.
Then the LORD said to Moses,5The LORD told Moses,
“Call forward the tribe of Levi, and present them to Aaron the priest to serve as his assistants.6"Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them to Aaron the priest so they may serve him.
They will serve Aaron and the whole community, performing their sacred duties in and around the Tabernacle.7They are to take care of his needs and the needs of the whole congregation at the Tent of Meeting by performing duties at the tent.
They will also maintain all the furnishings of the sacred tent, serving in the Tabernacle on behalf of all the Israelites.8They are to take charge of the utensils at the Tent of Meeting and meet the needs of the Israelis by performing duties on behalf of the tent.
Assign the Levites to Aaron and his sons. They have been given from among all the people of Israel to serve as their assistants.9Assign the descendants of Levi to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelis.
Appoint Aaron and his sons to carry out the duties of the priesthood. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the sanctuary must be put to death.”10Appoint Aaron and his sons so that they are to take responsibility for their priesthood. Any unauthorized person who approaches it is to be put to death."
And the LORD said to Moses,11Later, the LORD told Moses,
“Look, I have chosen the Levites from among the Israelites to serve as substitutes for all the firstborn sons of the people of Israel. The Levites belong to me,12"I'm taking the descendants of Levi for myself from among the Israelis in place of every first-born who opens the womb. The descendants of Levi belong to me
for all the firstborn males are mine. On the day I struck down all the firstborn sons of the Egyptians, I set apart for myself all the firstborn in Israel, both of people and of animals. They are mine; I am the LORD.” Registration of the Levites13because all the first-born belong to me. When I destroyed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated all the first-born in Israel for myself—from human beings to livestock. They belong to me, since I am the LORD."
The LORD spoke again to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai. He said,14The LORD also told Moses in the Sinai wilderness,
“Record the names of the members of the tribe of Levi by their families and clans. List every male who is one month old or older.”15"Number the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral houses and tribes, numbering every male from a month old and above."
So Moses listed them, just as the LORD had commanded.16So Moses numbered them according to the instruction of the LORD, as he had been commanded.
Levi had three sons, whose names were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.17These are Levi's descendants by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
The clans descended from Gershon were named after two of his descendants, Libni and Shimei.18These are names of Gershon's descendants according to their families: Libni and Shimei.
The clans descended from Kohath were named after four of his descendants, Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.19These are the names of Kohath's descendants according to their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
The clans descended from Merari were named after two of his descendants, Mahli and Mushi. These were the Levite clans, listed according to their family groups.20Merari's descendants according to their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral house.
The descendants of Gershon were composed of the clans descended from Libni and Shimei.21The families of Libni and Shimei were descendants of Gershon. As families of the descendants of Gershon,
There were 7,500 males one month old or older among these Gershonite clans.22all the males a month old and above numbered 7,500.
They were assigned the area to the west of the Tabernacle for their camp.23The families of the descendants of Gershon encamped behind the tent toward the west.
The leader of the Gershonite clans was Eliasaph son of Lael.24The leader of the tribe and family of Gershon was Lael's son Eliasaph.
These two clans were responsible to care for the Tabernacle, including the sacred tent with its layers of coverings, the curtain at its entrance,25The duties of the descendants of Gershon at the Tent of Meeting pertained to the tent, the tent covering, the curtain to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting,
the curtains of the courtyard that surrounded the Tabernacle and altar, the curtain at the courtyard entrance, the ropes, and all the equipment related to their use.26the hangings at the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance of the courtyard that surrounded the tent, the altar, and all of the tent cords in use.
The descendants of Kohath were composed of the clans descended from Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.27The families of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel were descendants of Kohath. As families of the descendants of Kohath,
There were 8,600 males one month old or older among these Kohathite clans. They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary,28all the males a month old and above numbered 8,600. They were tasked to the care of the sanctuary.
and they were assigned the area south of the Tabernacle for their camp.29The descendants of Kohath encamped beside the tent toward the south.
The leader of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.30The leader of the tribe and family of Kohath was Uzziel's son Elizaphan.
These four clans were responsible for the care of the Ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the various articles used in the sanctuary, the inner curtain, and all the equipment related to their use.31Their duties pertained to the ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, and all the curtains in use.
Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, was the chief administrator over all the Levites, with special responsibility for the oversight of the sanctuary.32The chief of all the leaders of the descendants of Levi was Aaron the priest's son Eleazar. He was assigned to oversee those who were in charge of the services of the sanctuary.
The descendants of Merari were composed of the clans descended from Mahli and Mushi.33The families of Mahli and Mushi were descendants of Merari. As families of Merari,
There were 6,200 males one month old or older among these Merarite clans.34all the males a month old and above numbered 6,200.
They were assigned the area north of the Tabernacle for their camp. The leader of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail.35The leader of the tribe and family of Merari was Abihail's son Zuriel. The descendants of Merari encamped beside the tent toward the north.
These two clans were responsible for the care of the frames supporting the Tabernacle, the crossbars, the pillars, the bases, and all the equipment related to their use.36The duties of the caretakers from the descendants of Merari included the boards of the tent, its bars, crossbars, sockets, all its utensils for their services,
They were also responsible for the posts of the courtyard and all their bases, pegs, and ropes.37the pillars around the courtyard, their sockets, pegs, and tent cords.
The area in front of the Tabernacle, in the east toward the sunrise, was reserved for the tents of Moses and of Aaron and his sons, who had the final responsibility for the sanctuary on behalf of the people of Israel. Anyone other than a priest or Levite who went too near the sanctuary was to be put to death.38In front of the tent and east of the Tent of Meeting, Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons encamped facing the east. They were tasked to perform the duties of the sanctuary and care for the needs of the Israelis. Any unauthorized person who approached was to be executed.
When Moses and Aaron counted the Levite clans at the LORD’s command, the total number was 22,000 males one month old or older. Redeeming the Firstborn Sons39As the LORD had instructed, everyone counted by Moses and Aaron from the descendants of Levi, according to their tribe, all males from a month old and above numbered 22,000.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Now count all the firstborn sons in Israel who are one month old or older, and make a list of their names.40Later the LORD instructed Moses: "Number all the first-born males of Israel from a month old and above and list their names.
The Levites must be reserved for me as substitutes for the firstborn sons of Israel; I am the LORD. And the Levites’ livestock must be reserved for me as substitutes for the firstborn livestock of the whole nation of Israel.”41Separate the descendants of Levi for me—since I am the LORD—in place of all the first-born sons of Israel. Also separate the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of Israel."
So Moses counted the firstborn sons of the people of Israel, just as the LORD had commanded.42So Moses numbered all the firstborn from the sons of Israel just as the LORD commanded him.
The number of firstborn sons who were one month old or older was 22,273.43All the first-born males according to the list of their names from a month old and above numbered 22,273.
Then the LORD said to Moses,44Then the LORD told Moses,
“Take the Levites as substitutes for the firstborn sons of the people of Israel. And take the livestock of the Levites as substitutes for the firstborn livestock of the people of Israel. The Levites belong to me; I am the LORD.45"Separate the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn sons of Israel and the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of their livestock. The descendants of Levi belong to me, since I am the LORD.
There are 273 more firstborn sons of Israel than there are Levites. To redeem these extra firstborn sons,46You are to pay a ransom for the 273 first-born Israelis who exceed the census number of the descendants of Levi,
collect five pieces of silver for each of them (each piece weighing the same as the sanctuary shekel, which equals twenty gerahs).47so collect five shekels for each individual, denominated in shekels of the sanctuary, that is, the shekel that weighs 20 gerahs.
Give the silver to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for the extra firstborn sons.”48Then give the money meant for ransom of their excess to Aaron and his sons."
So Moses collected the silver for redeeming the firstborn sons of Israel who exceeded the number of Levites.49So Moses took the ransom money to account for the difference in the total number of those redeemed by the descendants of Levi.
He collected 1,365 pieces of silver on behalf of these firstborn sons of Israel (each piece weighing the same as the sanctuary shekel).50From the firstborn of the Israelis, Moses took money amounting to 1,365 shekels according to the shekel of the sanctuary.
And Moses gave the silver for the redemption to Aaron and his sons, just as the LORD had commanded.51Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and his sons according to the LORD's instructions, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
