After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,1After the plague was over, the LORD told Moses and Aaron the priest's son Eleazar,
“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their families. List all the men twenty years old or older who are able to go to war.”2"Take a census of the entire community of Israel from the age of 20 years and above, according to each ancestral tribe, counting everyone who is able to go out to war in Israel."
So there on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued these instructions to the leaders of Israel:3Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to them in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan River in Jericho.

In summary, the registered troops of all Israel numbered 601,730.51The total of those numbered among the Israelis was 601,730.
Then the LORD said to Moses,52Then the LORD told Moses,
“Divide the land among the tribes, and distribute the grants of land in proportion to the tribes’ populations, as indicated by the number of names on the list.53"The land is to be divided for an inheritance according to the total number of these names.
Give the larger tribes more land and the smaller tribes less land, each group receiving a grant in proportion to the size of its population.54The more there are in number, you are to increase their inheritance, and the less there are in number, you are to decrease their inheritance. You are to provide an inheritance to each based on the size of their family,
But you must assign the land by lot, and give land to each ancestral tribe according to the number of names on the list.55but the land is to be divided by lot, inheriting according to the names of their ancestor's tribe.
Each grant of land must be assigned by lot among the larger and smaller tribal groups.” The Tribe of Levi56Depending on the lot, the portion of their inheritance is to be divided between those with more members and those with fewer members."
This is the record of the Levites who were counted according to their clans: The Gershonite clan, named after their ancestor Gershon. The Kohathite clan, named after their ancestor Kohath. The Merarite clan, named after their ancestor Merari.57Those who were numbered from the descendants of Levi, listed according to their families, included: From Gershon, the family of the descendants of Gershon; from Kohath, the family of the descendants of Kohath; and from Merari, the family of the descendants of Merari.
The Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites were all subclans of the Levites. Now Kohath was the ancestor of Amram,58These were the families of Levi: The family of the descendants of Libni, the family of the descendants of Hebron, the family of the descendants of Mahli, the family of the descendants of Musha, and the family of the descendants of Korah. Now Kohath had a son named Amram.
and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. Amram and Jochebed became the parents of Aaron, Moses, and their sister, Miriam.59Amram's wife was Levi's daughter Jochebed, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She gave birth to Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.60To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned before the LORD the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.61But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire in the LORD's presence.
The men from the Levite clans who were one month old or older numbered 23,000. But the Levites were not included in the registration of the rest of the people of Israel because they were not given an allotment of land when it was divided among the Israelites.62All of those individuals numbered 23,000. No male from the age of a month and above was numbered among the Israelis because no inheritance was to be assigned to them among the Israelis.
So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.63So this has been a list of those who were registered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they numbered the Israelis in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai.64But none of these men among these numbered by Moses and by Aaron the priest (that is, when they numbered the Israelis in the wilderness of Sinai) survived to enter the land,
For the LORD had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.65because the LORD had said about them, "They'll certainly die in the wilderness. No man will survive from them except Jephunneh's son Caleb and Nun's son Joshua."
