Then the LORD said to Moses,52The LORD spoke to Moses,
“Divide the land among the tribes, and distribute the grants of land in proportion to the tribes’ populations, as indicated by the number of names on the list.53"The land is to be divided among them as an inheritance based on the number of names.
Give the larger tribes more land and the smaller tribes less land, each group receiving a grant in proportion to the size of its population.54Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one. Each is to be given its inheritance according to those who were registered in it.
But you must assign the land by lot, and give land to each ancestral tribe according to the number of names on the list.55The land is to be divided by lot; they will receive an inheritance according to the names of their ancestral tribes.
Each grant of land must be assigned by lot among the larger and smaller tribal groups.” The Tribe of Levi56Each inheritance will be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes."
This is the record of the Levites who were counted according to their clans: The Gershonite clan, named after their ancestor Gershon. The Kohathite clan, named after their ancestor Kohath. Now Kohath was the ancestor of Amram,58These were the Levite family groups: the Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. 59and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. She bore to Amram: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.60Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned before the LORD the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.61but Nadab and Abihu died when they presented unauthorized fire before the LORD.
The men from the Levite clans who were one month old or older numbered 23,000. But the Levites were not included in the registration of the rest of the people of Israel because they were not given an allotment of land when it was divided among the Israelites.62Those registered were 23,000, every male one month old or more; they were not registered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.63These were the ones registered by Moses and the priest Eleazar when they registered the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai.64But among them there was not one of those who had been registered by Moses and the priest Aaron when they registered the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
For the LORD had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.65For the LORD had said to them that they would all die in the wilderness. None of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
