New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
Elihu continued speaking:1Elihu responded again and said:
“Let me go on, and I will show you the truth. For I have not finished defending God!2"Be patient with me a moment longer, and I'll show you that there's more to say on God's behalf.
I will present profound arguments for the righteousness of my Creator.3I'll take what I know to its logical conclusion and ascribe righteousness to my Creator,
I am telling you nothing but the truth, for I am a man of great knowledge.4because what I have to say isn't deceptive, and the one who has perfect knowledge is with you."
“God is mighty, but he does not despise anyone! He is mighty in both power and understanding.5"Indeed God is mighty and he doesn't show disrespect; he is mighty and strong of heart.
He does not let the wicked live but gives justice to the afflicted.6He doesn't let the wicked live; he grants justice to the afflicted.
He never takes his eyes off the innocent, but he sets them on thrones with kings and exalts them forever.7He won't stop looking at righteous people; he seats them on thrones with kings forever, and they are exalted.
If they are bound in chains and caught up in a web of trouble,8"If they're bound in chains, caught in ropes of affliction,
he shows them the reason. He shows them their sins of pride.9he'll reveal their actions to them, when their transgressions have become excessive.
He gets their attention and commands that they turn from evil.10He opens their ears and instructs them, commanding them to repent from evil.
“If they listen and obey God, they will be blessed with prosperity throughout their lives. All their years will be pleasant.11If they listen and serve him, they'll finish their lives in prosperity and their years will be pleasant.
But if they refuse to listen to him, they will cross over the river of death, dying from lack of understanding.12"But if they won't listen, they'll perish by the sword and die in their ignorance.
For the godless are full of resentment. Even when he punishes them, they refuse to cry out to him for help.13The godless at heart cherish anger; they won't cry out for help when God afflicts them.
They die when they are young, after wasting their lives in immoral living.14They die in their youth; and their life will end among temple prostitutes.
But by means of their suffering, he rescues those who suffer. For he gets their attention through adversity.15He'll deliver the afflicted through their afflictions and open their ears when they are oppressed."
“God is leading you away from danger, Job, to a place free from distress. He is setting your table with the best food.16"Indeed, he drew you away from the brink of distress to a spacious place without constraints, filling your festive table with bountiful food.
But you are obsessed with whether the godless will be judged. Don’t worry, judgment and justice will be upheld.17But now you are occupied with the case of the wicked; but justice and judgment will be served.
But watch out, or you may be seduced by wealth. Don’t let yourself be bribed into sin.18So that no one entices you with riches, don't let a large ransom turn you astray.
Could all your wealth or all your mighty efforts keep you from distress?19"Will your wealth sustain you when you're in distress, despite your most powerful efforts?
Do not long for the cover of night, for that is when people will be destroyed.20Don't long for night, when people vanish in their place.
Be on guard! Turn back from evil, for God sent this suffering to keep you from a life of evil. Elihu Reminds Job of God’s Power21Be careful! Don't turn to evil, because of this you will be tried by more than affliction.
“Look, God is all-powerful. Who is a teacher like him?22"Indeed, God is exalted in his power. Who is like him as a teacher?
No one can tell him what to do, or say to him, ‘You have done wrong.’23Who ordained his path for him, and who has asked him, 'You are wrong, aren't you?'
Instead, glorify his mighty works, singing songs of praise.24Remember to magnify his awesome activities, about which mortal man has sung.
Everyone has seen these things, though only from a distance.25All of mankind sees him; human beings observe him from afar off."
“Look, God is greater than we can understand. His years cannot be counted.26"God is truly awesome, beyond what we know; the number of his years is unknowable.
He draws up the water vapor and then distills it into rain.27He draws up drops of water, distilling it to rain and mist.
The rain pours down from the clouds, and everyone benefits.28When the clouds pour down; they drop their rain on all of humanity.
Who can understand the spreading of the clouds and the thunder that rolls forth from heaven?29"Furthermore, can anyone understand cloud patterns, or the thundering in his pavilion?
See how he spreads the lightning around him and how it lights up the depths of the sea.30He scatters his lightning above it, and covers the bottom of the sea.
By these mighty acts he nourishes the people, giving them food in abundance.31He uses them to judge some people and give food to many.
He fills his hands with lightning bolts and hurls each at its target.32His hands are covered with lightning that he commands to strike his designated target.
The thunder announces his presence; the storm announces his indignant anger.33His thunder declares his presence; and tells the animals what is coming."
