New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
Elihu continued speaking: | 1Elihu responded again and said: |
“Let me go on, and I will show you the truth. For I have not finished defending God! | 2"Be patient with me a moment longer, and I'll show you that there's more to say on God's behalf. |
I will present profound arguments for the righteousness of my Creator. | 3I'll take what I know to its logical conclusion and ascribe righteousness to my Creator, |
I am telling you nothing but the truth, for I am a man of great knowledge. | 4because what I have to say isn't deceptive, and the one who has perfect knowledge is with you." |
“God is mighty, but he does not despise anyone! He is mighty in both power and understanding. | 5"Indeed God is mighty and he doesn't show disrespect; he is mighty and strong of heart. |
He does not let the wicked live but gives justice to the afflicted. | 6He doesn't let the wicked live; he grants justice to the afflicted. |
He never takes his eyes off the innocent, but he sets them on thrones with kings and exalts them forever. | 7He won't stop looking at righteous people; he seats them on thrones with kings forever, and they are exalted. |
If they are bound in chains and caught up in a web of trouble, | 8"If they're bound in chains, caught in ropes of affliction, |
he shows them the reason. He shows them their sins of pride. | 9he'll reveal their actions to them, when their transgressions have become excessive. |
He gets their attention and commands that they turn from evil. | 10He opens their ears and instructs them, commanding them to repent from evil. |
“If they listen and obey God, they will be blessed with prosperity throughout their lives. All their years will be pleasant. | 11If they listen and serve him, they'll finish their lives in prosperity and their years will be pleasant. |
But if they refuse to listen to him, they will cross over the river of death, dying from lack of understanding. | 12"But if they won't listen, they'll perish by the sword and die in their ignorance. |
For the godless are full of resentment. Even when he punishes them, they refuse to cry out to him for help. | 13The godless at heart cherish anger; they won't cry out for help when God afflicts them. |
They die when they are young, after wasting their lives in immoral living. | 14They die in their youth; and their life will end among temple prostitutes. |
But by means of their suffering, he rescues those who suffer. For he gets their attention through adversity. | 15He'll deliver the afflicted through their afflictions and open their ears when they are oppressed." |
“God is leading you away from danger, Job, to a place free from distress. He is setting your table with the best food. | 16"Indeed, he drew you away from the brink of distress to a spacious place without constraints, filling your festive table with bountiful food. |
But you are obsessed with whether the godless will be judged. Don’t worry, judgment and justice will be upheld. | 17But now you are occupied with the case of the wicked; but justice and judgment will be served. |
But watch out, or you may be seduced by wealth. Don’t let yourself be bribed into sin. | 18So that no one entices you with riches, don't let a large ransom turn you astray. |
Could all your wealth or all your mighty efforts keep you from distress? | 19"Will your wealth sustain you when you're in distress, despite your most powerful efforts? |
Do not long for the cover of night, for that is when people will be destroyed. | 20Don't long for night, when people vanish in their place. |
Be on guard! Turn back from evil, for God sent this suffering to keep you from a life of evil. Elihu Reminds Job of God’s Power | 21Be careful! Don't turn to evil, because of this you will be tried by more than affliction. |
“Look, God is all-powerful. Who is a teacher like him? | 22"Indeed, God is exalted in his power. Who is like him as a teacher? |
No one can tell him what to do, or say to him, ‘You have done wrong.’ | 23Who ordained his path for him, and who has asked him, 'You are wrong, aren't you?' |
Instead, glorify his mighty works, singing songs of praise. | 24Remember to magnify his awesome activities, about which mortal man has sung. |
Everyone has seen these things, though only from a distance. | 25All of mankind sees him; human beings observe him from afar off." |
“Look, God is greater than we can understand. His years cannot be counted. | 26"God is truly awesome, beyond what we know; the number of his years is unknowable. |
He draws up the water vapor and then distills it into rain. | 27He draws up drops of water, distilling it to rain and mist. |
The rain pours down from the clouds, and everyone benefits. | 28When the clouds pour down; they drop their rain on all of humanity. |
Who can understand the spreading of the clouds and the thunder that rolls forth from heaven? | 29"Furthermore, can anyone understand cloud patterns, or the thundering in his pavilion? |
See how he spreads the lightning around him and how it lights up the depths of the sea. | 30He scatters his lightning above it, and covers the bottom of the sea. |
By these mighty acts he nourishes the people, giving them food in abundance. | 31He uses them to judge some people and give food to many. |
He fills his hands with lightning bolts and hurls each at its target. | 32His hands are covered with lightning that he commands to strike his designated target. |
The thunder announces his presence; the storm announces his indignant anger. | 33His thunder declares his presence; and tells the animals what is coming." |
