New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. | 1Therefore, if you have been raised with the Messiah, keep focusing on the things that are above, where the Messiah is seated at the right hand of God. |
Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. | 2Keep your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth. |
For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. | 3For you have died, and your life has been safely guarded by the Messiah in God. |
And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory. | 4When the Messiah, who is your life, is revealed, then you, too, will be revealed with him in glory. |
So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. | 5So put to death your worldly impulses: sexual sin, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). |
Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. | 6It is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. |
You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. | 7You used to behave like them as you lived among them. |
But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. | 8But now you must also get rid of anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene speech, and all such sins. |
Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. | 9Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old nature with its practices |
Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. | 10and have clothed yourselves with the new nature, which is being renewed in full knowledge, consistent with the image of the one who created it. |
In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. | 11In him there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, or free person. Instead, the Messiah is all and in all. |
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. | 12Therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. |
Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. | 13Be tolerant of one another and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, you also should forgive. |
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. | 14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which ties everything together in unity. |
And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. | 15Let the peace of the Messiah also rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one body, and be thankful. |
Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. | 16Let the word of the Messiah inhabit you richly with wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, and singing to God with thankfulness in your hearts. |
And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. Instructions for Christian Households | 17And whatever you do, whether by speech or action, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. |
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord. | 18Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is appropriate for those who belong to the Lord. |
Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly. | 19Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. |
Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord. | 20Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. |
Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged. | 21Fathers, do not make your children resentful. Otherwise, they'll become discouraged. |
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord. | 22Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only while being watched in order to please them, but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord. |
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. | 23Whatever you do, work at it wholeheartedly as though you were doing it for the Lord and not merely for people. |
Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. | 24You know that it is from the Lord that you will receive the inheritance as a reward. It is the Lord Messiah whom you are serving! |
But if you do what is wrong, you will be paid back for the wrong you have done. For God has no favorites. | 25For the person who does what is wrong will be paid back for what he has done without favoritism. |
