| 1Sing praises to God, our strength. Sing to the God of Jacob. | 1For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. Of Asaph. Sing for joy to God our strength; make a joyful noise to the God of Jacob. |
| 2Sing! Beat the tambourine. Play the sweet lyre and the harp. | 2Lift up a song, strike the tambourine, play the sweet-sounding harp and lyre. |
| 3Blow the ram’s horn at new moon, and again at full moon to call a festival! | 3Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon, and at the full moon on the day of our Feast. |
| 4For this is required by the decrees of Israel; it is a regulation of the God of Jacob. | 4For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob. |
| 5He made it a law for Israel when he attacked Egypt to set us free. I heard an unknown voice say, | 5He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt, where I heard an unfamiliar language: |
| 6“Now I will take the load from your shoulders; I will free your hands from their heavy tasks. | 6“I relieved his shoulder of the burden; his hands were freed from the basket. |
| 7You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you; I answered out of the thundercloud and tested your faith when there was no water at Meribah. Interlude | 7You called out in distress, and I rescued you; I answered you from the cloud of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah |
| 8“Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings. O Israel, if you would only listen to me! | 8Hear, O My people, and I will warn you: O Israel, if only you would listen to Me! |
| 9You must never have a foreign god; you must not bow down before a false god. | 9There must be no strange god among you, nor shall you bow to a foreign god. |
| 10For it was I, the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things. | 10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it. |
| 11“But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. | 11But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not obey Me. |
| 12So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas. | 12So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. |
| 13Oh, that my people would listen to me! Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths! | 13If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would follow My ways, |
| 14How quickly I would then subdue their enemies! How soon my hands would be upon their foes! | 14how soon I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes! |
| 15Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him; they would be doomed forever. | 15Those who hate the LORD would feign obedience, and their doom would last forever. |
| 16But I would feed you with the finest wheat. I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock.” | 16But I would feed you the finest wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” |
