| 1To the Chief Musician. Set to “Do Not Destroy.” A Psalm of Asaph. A Song. We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near. | 1We thank you, O God! We give thanks because you are near. People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds. |
| 2“When I choose the proper time, I will judge uprightly. | 2God says, “At the time I have planned, I will bring justice against the wicked. |
| 3The earth and all its inhabitants are dissolved; I set up its pillars firmly. Selah | 3When the earth quakes and its people live in turmoil, I am the one who keeps its foundations firm. Interlude |
| 4“I said to the boastful, ‘Do not deal boastfully,’ And to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up the horn. | 4“I warned the proud, ‘Stop your boasting!’ I told the wicked, ‘Don’t raise your fists! |
| 5Do not lift up your horn on high; Do not speak with a stiff neck.’ ” | 5Don’t raise your fists in defiance at the heavens or speak with such arrogance.’” |
| 6For exaltation comes neither from the east Nor from the west nor from the south. | 6For no one on earth—from east or west, or even from the wilderness— should raise a defiant fist. |
| 7But God is the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another. | 7It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall. |
