New King James Version | New Living Translation |
Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: | 1Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: |
“How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterward we will speak. | 2“How long before you stop talking? Speak sense if you want us to answer! |
Why are we counted as beasts, And regarded as stupid in your sight? | 3Do you think we are mere animals? Do you think we are stupid? |
You who tear yourself in anger, Shall the earth be forsaken for you? Or shall the rock be removed from its place? | 4You may tear out your hair in anger, but will that destroy the earth? Will it make the rocks tremble? |
“The light of the wicked indeed goes out, And the flame of his fire does not shine. | 5“Surely the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. The sparks of their fire will not glow. |
The light is dark in his tent, And his lamp beside him is put out. | 6The light in their tent will grow dark. The lamp hanging above them will be quenched. |
The steps of his strength are shortened, And his own counsel casts him down. | 7The confident stride of the wicked will be shortened. Their own schemes will be their downfall. |
For he is cast into a net by his own feet, And he walks into a snare. | 8The wicked walk into a net. They fall into a pit. |
The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him. | 9A trap grabs them by the heel. A snare holds them tight. |
A noose is hidden for him on the ground, And a trap for him in the road. | 10A noose lies hidden on the ground. A rope is stretched across their path. |
Terrors frighten him on every side, And drive him to his feet. | 11“Terrors surround the wicked and trouble them at every step. |
His strength is starved, And destruction is ready at his side. | 12Hunger depletes their strength, and calamity waits for them to stumble. |
It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his limbs. | 13Disease eats their skin; death devours their limbs. |
He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before the king of terrors. | 14They are torn from the security of their homes and are brought down to the king of terrors. |
They dwell in his tent who are none of his; Brimstone is scattered on his dwelling. | 15The homes of the wicked will burn down; burning sulfur rains on their houses. |
His roots are dried out below, And his branch withers above. | 16Their roots will dry up, and their branches will wither. |
The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name among the renowned. | 17All memory of their existence will fade from the earth; no one will remember their names. |
He is driven from light into darkness, And chased out of the world. | 18They will be thrust from light into darkness, driven from the world. |
He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings. | 19They will have neither children nor grandchildren, nor any survivor in the place where they lived. |
Those in the west are astonished at his day, As those in the east are frightened. | 20People in the west are appalled at their fate; people in the east are horrified. |
Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, And this is the place of him who does not know God.” | 21They will say, ‘This was the home of a wicked person, the place of one who rejected God.’” |
