New King James Version | New International Version |
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, | 1As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. |
and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith. | 2And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. |
But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. | 3But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. |
And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you. | 4We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. |
Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ. | 5May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance. |
But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. | 6In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. |
For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; | 7For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, |
nor did we eat anyone’s bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, | 8nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. |
not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. | 9We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. |
For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. | 10For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat." |
For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. | 11We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. |
Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. | 12Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. |
But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. | 13And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good. |
And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. | 14Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. |
Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. | 15Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer. |
Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all. | 16Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. |
The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is a sign in every epistle; so I write. | 17I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. | 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. |
