New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, | 1Finally, brothers, pray for us that the Lord's message may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you, |
and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith. | 2and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not all have faith. |
But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. | 3But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen and guard you from the evil one. |
And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you. | 4We have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do what we command. |
Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ. | 5May the Lord direct your hearts to God's love and Christ's endurance. |
But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. | 6Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother who walks irresponsibly and not according to the tradition received from us. |
For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; | 7For you yourselves know how you must imitate us: We were not irresponsible among you; |
nor did we eat anyone’s bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, | 8we did not eat anyone's food free of charge; instead, we labored and struggled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you. |
not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. | 9It is not that we don't have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us. |
For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. | 10In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: "If anyone isn't willing to work, he should not eat." |
For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. | 11For we hear that there are some among you who walk irresponsibly, not working at all, but interfering with the work of others. |
Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. | 12Now we command and exhort such people by the Lord Jesus Christ that quietly working, they may eat their own food. |
But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. | 13Brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. |
And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. | 14And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person; don't associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. |
Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. | 15Yet don't treat him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. |
Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all. | 16May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with all of you. |
The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is a sign in every epistle; so I write. | 17This greeting is in my own hand--Paul. This is a sign in every letter; this is how I write. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. | 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. |
