In the seventh month, on the twenty-first of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying:1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet: "
“Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying:2Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people:
‘Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, is this not in your eyes as nothing?3Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn't it seem like nothing to you?
Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the LORD; ‘and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the LORD, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says the LORD of hosts.4Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel"--this is the LORD's declaration. "Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land"--this is the LORD's declaration. "Work! For I am with you"--the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. "
According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so My Spirit remains among you; do not fear!’5This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and My Spirit is present among you; don't be afraid."
“For thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land;6For the LORD of Hosts says this: "Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the LORD of hosts.7I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory," says the LORD of Hosts. "
‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the LORD of hosts.8The silver and gold belong to Me"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. "
‘The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the LORD of hosts. ‘And in this place I will give peace,’ says the LORD of hosts.”9The final glory of this house will be greater than the first," says the LORD of Hosts. "I will provide peace in this place"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts.
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying,10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet: "
“Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Now, ask the priests concerning the law, saying,11This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Ask the priests for a ruling.
“If one carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with the edge he touches bread or stew, wine or oil, or any food, will it become holy?” ’ ” Then the priests answered and said, “No.”12If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?" The priests answered, "No."
And Haggai said, “If one who is unclean because of a dead body touches any of these, will it be unclean?” So the priests answered and said, “It shall be unclean.”13Then Haggai asked, "If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?" The priests answered, "It becomes defiled."
Then Haggai answered and said, “ ‘So is this people, and so is this nation before Me,’ says the LORD, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.14Then Haggai replied, "So is this people, and so is this nation before Me"--this is the LORD's declaration. "And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled."
‘And now, carefully consider from this day forward: from before stone was laid upon stone in the temple of the LORD—15Now, reflect back from this day: Before one stone was placed on another in the LORD's temple,
since those days, when one came to a heap of twenty ephahs, there were but ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty baths from the press, there were but twenty.16what state were you in? When someone came to a grain heap of 20 measures, it only amounted to 10; when one came to the winepress to dip 50 measures from the vat, it only amounted to 20.
I struck you with blight and mildew and hail in all the labors of your hands; yet you did not turn to Me,’ says the LORD.17I struck you--all the work of your hands--with blight, mildew, and hail, but you didn't turn to Me"--this is the LORD's declaration. "
‘Consider now from this day forward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid—consider it:18Consider carefully from this day forward; from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid; consider it carefully.
Is the seed still in the barn? As yet the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yielded fruit. But from this day I will bless you.’ ”19Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. But from this day on I will bless you."
And again the word of the LORD came to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,20The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: "
“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying: ‘I will shake heaven and earth.21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overthrow the chariots And those who ride in them; The horses and their riders shall come down, Every one by the sword of his brother.22I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother's sword.
‘In that day,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says the LORD, ‘and will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,’ says the LORD of hosts.”23On that day"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts--"I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant"--this is the LORD's declaration--"and make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you." This is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts.
