Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly.1From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
And he said: “I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.2saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.
For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.3For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’4At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head.5The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.
I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God.6To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple.7As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
“Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy.8Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.
But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.”9But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.10And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
