New International Version | New Living Translation |
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. | 1Then I witnessed in heaven an event of great significance. I saw a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. |
She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. | 2She was pregnant, and she cried out because of her labor pains and the agony of giving birth. |
Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. | 3Then I witnessed in heaven another significant event. I saw a large red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, with seven crowns on his heads. |
Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. | 4His tail swept away one-third of the stars in the sky, and he threw them to the earth. He stood in front of the woman as she was about to give birth, ready to devour her baby as soon as it was born. |
She gave birth to a son, a male child, who "will rule all the nations with an iron scepter." And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. | 5She gave birth to a son who was to rule all nations with an iron rod. And her child was snatched away from the dragon and was caught up to God and to his throne. |
The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days. | 6And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place to care for her for 1,260 days. |
Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. | 7Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. |
But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. | 8And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. |
The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. | 9This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels. |
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. | 10Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, “It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night. |
They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. | 11And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die. |
Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short." | 12Therefore, rejoice, O heavens! And you who live in the heavens, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you in great anger, knowing that he has little time.” |
When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. | 13When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. |
The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent's reach. | 14But she was given two wings like those of a great eagle so she could fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness. There she would be cared for and protected from the dragon for a time, times, and half a time. |
Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. | 15Then the dragon tried to drown the woman with a flood of water that flowed from his mouth. |
But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. | 16But the earth helped her by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that gushed out from the mouth of the dragon. |
Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring--those who keep God's commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus. | 17And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus. [18] Then the dragon took his stand on the shore beside the sea. |
