New International Version | New Living Translation |
Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. | 1While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because he had married a Cushite woman. |
"Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?" they asked. "Hasn't he also spoken through us?" And the LORD heard this. | 2They said, “Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us, too?” But the LORD heard them. |
(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.) | 3(Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.) |
At once the LORD said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, "Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you." So the three of them went out. | 4So immediately the LORD called to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam and said, “Go out to the Tabernacle, all three of you!” So the three of them went to the Tabernacle. |
Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, | 5Then the LORD descended in the pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the Tabernacle. “Aaron and Miriam!” he called, and they stepped forward. |
he said, "Listen to my words: "When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams. | 6And the LORD said to them, “Now listen to what I say: “If there were prophets among you, I, the LORD, would reveal myself in visions. I would speak to them in dreams. |
But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. | 7But not with my servant Moses. Of all my house, he is the one I trust. |
With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?" | 8I speak to him face to face, clearly, and not in riddles! He sees the LORD as he is. So why were you not afraid to criticize my servant Moses?” |
The anger of the LORD burned against them, and he left them. | 9The LORD was very angry with them, and he departed. |
When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam's skin was leprous --it became as white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease, | 10As the cloud moved from above the Tabernacle, there stood Miriam, her skin as white as snow from leprosy. When Aaron saw what had happened to her, |
and he said to Moses, "Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. | 11he cried out to Moses, “Oh, my master! Please don’t punish us for this sin we have so foolishly committed. |
Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother's womb with its flesh half eaten away." | 12Don’t let her be like a stillborn baby, already decayed at birth.” |
So Moses cried out to the LORD, "Please, God, heal her!" | 13So Moses cried out to the LORD, “O God, I beg you, please heal her!” |
The LORD replied to Moses, "If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back." | 14But the LORD said to Moses, “If her father had done nothing more than spit in her face, wouldn’t she be defiled for seven days? So keep her outside the camp for seven days, and after that she may be accepted back.” |
So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back. | 15So Miriam was kept outside the camp for seven days, and the people waited until she was brought back before they traveled again. |
After that, the people left Hazeroth and encamped in the Desert of Paran. | 16Then they left Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran. |
