Job 18
NIV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionNew Living Translation
Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:1Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
"When will you end these speeches? Be sensible, and then we can talk.2“How long before you stop talking? Speak sense if you want us to answer!
Why are we regarded as cattle and considered stupid in your sight?3Do you think we are mere animals? Do you think we are stupid?
You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, is the earth to be abandoned for your sake? Or must the rocks be moved from their place?4You may tear out your hair in anger, but will that destroy the earth? Will it make the rocks tremble?
"The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out; the flame of his fire stops burning.5“Surely the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. The sparks of their fire will not glow.
The light in his tent becomes dark; the lamp beside him goes out.6The light in their tent will grow dark. The lamp hanging above them will be quenched.
The vigor of his step is weakened; his own schemes throw him down.7The confident stride of the wicked will be shortened. Their own schemes will be their downfall.
His feet thrust him into a net; he wanders into its mesh.8The wicked walk into a net. They fall into a pit.
A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare holds him fast.9A trap grabs them by the heel. A snare holds them tight.
A noose is hidden for him on the ground; a trap lies in his path.10A noose lies hidden on the ground. A rope is stretched across their path.
Terrors startle him on every side and dog his every step.11“Terrors surround the wicked and trouble them at every step.
Calamity is hungry for him; disaster is ready for him when he falls.12Hunger depletes their strength, and calamity waits for them to stumble.
It eats away parts of his skin; death's firstborn devours his limbs.13Disease eats their skin; death devours their limbs.
He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors.14They are torn from the security of their homes and are brought down to the king of terrors.
Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling.15The homes of the wicked will burn down; burning sulfur rains on their houses.
His roots dry up below and his branches wither above.16Their roots will dry up, and their branches will wither.
The memory of him perishes from the earth; he has no name in the land.17All memory of their existence will fade from the earth; no one will remember their names.
He is driven from light into the realm of darkness and is banished from the world.18They will be thrust from light into darkness, driven from the world.
He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived.19They will have neither children nor grandchildren, nor any survivor in the place where they lived.
People of the west are appalled at his fate; those of the east are seized with horror.20People in the west are appalled at their fate; people in the east are horrified.
Surely such is the dwelling of an evil man; such is the place of one who does not know God."21They will say, ‘This was the home of a wicked person, the place of one who rejected God.’”
