New International Version | New Living Translation |
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. | 1So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. |
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. | 2On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. |
Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. | 3And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. |
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. | 4This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth. The Man and Woman in Eden When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, |
Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, | 5neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the LORD God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. |
but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. | 6Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land. |
Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. | 7Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. |
Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. | 8Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. |
The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. | 9The LORD God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground—trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. |
A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. | 10A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches. |
The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. | 11The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found. |
(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) | 12The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. |
The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. | 13The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush. |
The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. | 14The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates. |
The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. | 15The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. |
And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; | 16But the LORD God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— |
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die." | 17except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” |
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." | 18Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” |
Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. | 19So the LORD God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. |
So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. | 20He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him. |
So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. | 21So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. |
Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. | 22Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. |
The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." | 23“At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” |
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. | 24This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. |
Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. | 25Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame. |
