A psalm of David. A petition. LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. | 1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! |
Your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down on me. | 2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. |
Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin. | 3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. |
My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. | 4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. |
My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly. | 5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. |
I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. | 6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. |
My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. | 7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. |
I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. | 8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. |
All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. | 9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. |
My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes. | 10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. |
My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away. | 11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. |
Those who want to kill me set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they scheme and lie. | 12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. |
I am like the deaf, who cannot hear, like the mute, who cannot speak; | 13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. |
I have become like one who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply. | 14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. |
LORD, I wait for you; you will answer, Lord my God. | 15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! |
For I said, "Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip." | 16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. |
For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. | 17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. |
I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. | 18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. |
Many have become my enemies without cause; those who hate me without reason are numerous. | 19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. |
Those who repay my good with evil lodge accusations against me, though I seek only to do what is good. | 20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. |
LORD, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God. | 21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! |
Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior. | 22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! |
