In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the LORD.1And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.
The temple that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty wide and thirty high.2And the house which king Solomon built for the LORD, the length thereof was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, and the height thereof thirty cubits.
The portico at the front of the main hall of the temple extended the width of the temple, that is twenty cubits, and projected ten cubits from the front of the temple.3And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house.
He made narrow windows high up in the temple walls.4And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.
Against the walls of the main hall and inner sanctuary he built a structure around the building, in which there were side rooms.5And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he made chambers round about:
The lowest floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits and the third floor seven. He made offset ledges around the outside of the temple so that nothing would be inserted into the temple walls.6The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
In building the temple, only blocks dressed at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool was heard at the temple site while it was being built.7And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.
The entrance to the lowest floor was on the south side of the temple; a stairway led up to the middle level and from there to the third.8The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.
So he built the temple and completed it, roofing it with beams and cedar planks.9So he built the house, and finished it; and covered the house with beams and boards of cedar.
And he built the side rooms all along the temple. The height of each was five cubits, and they were attached to the temple by beams of cedar.10And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.
The word of the LORD came to Solomon:11And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying,
"As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father.12Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:
And I will live among the Israelites and will not abandon my people Israel."13And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.
So Solomon built the temple and completed it.14So Solomon built the house, and finished it.
He lined its interior walls with cedar boards, paneling them from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, and covered the floor of the temple with planks of juniper.15And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar, both the floor of the house, and the walls of the cieling: and he covered them on the inside with wood, and covered the floor of the house with planks of fir.
He partitioned off twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with cedar boards from floor to ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place.16And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the walls with boards of cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the oracle, even for the most holy place.
The main hall in front of this room was forty cubits long.17And the house, that is, the temple before it, was forty cubits long.
The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was to be seen.18And the cedar of the house within was carved with knops and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen.
He prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD there.19And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty wide and twenty high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold, and he also overlaid the altar of cedar.20And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar.
Solomon covered the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold.21So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.
So he overlaid the whole interior with gold. He also overlaid with gold the altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary.22And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold.
For the inner sanctuary he made a pair of cherubim out of olive wood, each ten cubits high.23And within the oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high.
One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long, and the other wing five cubits--ten cubits from wing tip to wing tip.24And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.
The second cherub also measured ten cubits, for the two cherubim were identical in size and shape.25And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims were of one measure and one size.
The height of each cherub was ten cubits.26The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub.
He placed the cherubim inside the innermost room of the temple, with their wings spread out. The wing of one cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the other touched the other wall, and their wings touched each other in the middle of the room.27And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
He overlaid the cherubim with gold.28And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.
On the walls all around the temple, in both the inner and outer rooms, he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers.29And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
He also covered the floors of both the inner and outer rooms of the temple with gold.30And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without.
For the entrance to the inner sanctuary he made doors out of olive wood that were one fifth of the width of the sanctuary.31And for the entering of the oracle he made doors of olive tree: the lintel and side posts were a fifth part of the wall.
And on the two olive-wood doors he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold.32The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees.
In the same way, for the entrance to the main hall he made doorframes out of olive wood that were one fourth of the width of the hall.33So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive tree, a fourth part of the wall.
He also made two doors out of juniper wood, each having two leaves that turned in sockets.34And the two doors were of fir tree: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.
He carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers on them and overlaid them with gold hammered evenly over the carvings.35And he carved thereon cherubims and palm trees and open flowers: and covered them with gold fitted upon the carved work.
And he built the inner courtyard of three courses of dressed stone and one course of trimmed cedar beams.36And he built the inner court with three rows of hewed stone, and a row of cedar beams.
The foundation of the temple of the LORD was laid in the fourth year, in the month of Ziv.37In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of the LORD laid, in the month Zif:
In the eleventh year in the month of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details according to its specifications. He had spent seven years building it.38And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.
