New International Version | International Standard Version |
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, | 1You used to be dead because of your offenses and sins |
in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. | 2that you once practiced as you lived according to the ways of this present world and according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now active in those who are disobedient. |
All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. | 3Indeed, all of us once behaved like them in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of our flesh and senses. By nature we were destined for wrath, just like everyone else. |
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, | 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us |
made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. | 5even when we were dead because of our offenses, made us alive together with the Messiah (by grace you have been saved), |
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, | 6raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly realm in the Messiah Jesus, |
in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. | 7so that in the coming ages he might display the limitless riches of his grace that comes to us through his kindness in the Messiah Jesus. |
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- | 8For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God |
not by works, so that no one can boast. | 9and not the result of actions, to put a stop to all boasting. |
For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. | 10For we are God's masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life. |
Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (which is done in the body by human hands)-- | 11So then, remember that at one time you gentiles by birth were called "the uncircumcised" by those who called themselves "the circumcised." They underwent physical circumcision done by human hands. |
remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. | 12At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise. You had no hope and were in the world without God. |
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. | 13But now, in union with the Messiah Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah. |
For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, | 14For it is he who is our peace. Through his mortality he made both groups one by tearing down the wall of hostility that divided them. |
by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, | 15He rendered the Law inoperative, along with its commandments and regulations, thus creating in himself one new humanity from the two, thereby making peace, |
and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. | 16and reconciling both groups to God in one body through the cross, on which he eliminated the hostility. |
He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. | 17He came and proclaimed peace for you who were far away and for you who were near. |
For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. | 18For through him, both of us have access to the Father by one Spirit. |
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household, | 19That is why you are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, |
built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. | 20having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone. |
In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. | 21In union with him the whole building is joined together and rises into a holy sanctuary for the Lord. |
And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. | 22You, too, are being built in him, along with the others, into a place for God's Spirit to dwell. |
