A psalm of Asaph. O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble. | 1A psalm of Asaph. God, the nations have invaded Your inheritance, desecrated Your holy temple, and turned Jerusalem into ruins. |
They have left the dead bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild. | 2They gave the corpses of Your servants to the birds of the sky for food, the flesh of Your godly ones to the beasts of the earth. |
They have poured out blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead. | 3They poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them. |
We are objects of contempt to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us. | 4We have become an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. |
How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? | 5How long, Yahweh? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy keep burning like fire? |
Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name; | 6Pour out Your wrath on the nations that don't acknowledge You, on the kingdoms that don't call on Your name, |
for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland. | 7for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland. |
Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. | 8Do not hold past sins against us; let Your compassion come to us quickly, for we have become weak. |
Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name's sake. | 9God of our salvation, help us-- for the glory of Your name. Deliver us and atone for our sins, because of Your name. |
Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants. | 10Why should the nations ask," Where is their God?" Before our eyes, let vengeance for the shed blood of Your servants be known among the nations. |
May the groans of the prisoners come before you; with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die. | 11Let the groans of the prisoners reach You; according to Your great power, preserve those condemned to die. |
Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord. | 12Pay back sevenfold to our neighbors the reproach they have hurled at You, Lord. |
Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will proclaim your praise. | 13Then we, Your people, the sheep of Your pasture, will thank You forever; we will declare Your praise to generation after generation. |
