New International Version | Berean Study Bible |
Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? | 1Why, O LORD, do You stand far off? Why do You hide in times of trouble? |
In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. | 2In pride the wicked pursue the needy; let them be caught in the schemes they devise. |
He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. | 3For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. |
In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. | 4In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his schemes there is no God. |
His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies. | 5He is secure in his ways at all times; Your lofty judgments are far from him; he sneers at all his foes. |
He says to himself, "Nothing will ever shake me." He swears, "No one will ever do me harm." | 6He says to himself, “I will not be moved; from age to age I am free of distress.” |
His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. | 7His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence; trouble and malice are under his tongue. |
He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims; | 8He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush he slays the innocent; his eyes watch in stealth for the helpless. |
like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. | 9He lies in wait like a lion in a thicket; he lurks to seize the oppressed; he catches the lowly in his net. |
His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. | 10They are crushed and beaten down; the hapless fall prey to his strength. |
He says to himself, "God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees." | 11He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and never sees.” |
Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. | 12Arise, O LORD! Lift up Your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless. |
Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? | 13Why has the wicked man renounced God? He says to himself, “You will never call me to account.” |
But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. | 14But You have regarded trouble and grief; You see to repay it by Your hand. The victim entrusts himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless. |
Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account for his wickedness until none is left to be found. |
The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish from His land. |
You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, | 17You have heard, O LORD, the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will incline Your ear, |
defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. | 18to vindicate the fatherless and oppressed, that the men of the earth may strike terror no more. |
