NET Bible | New International Version |
Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you pay no attention during times of trouble? | 1Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? |
The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed; the oppressed are trapped by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up. | 2In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. |
Yes, the wicked man boasts because he gets what he wants; the one who robs others curses and rejects the LORD. | 3He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. |
The wicked man is so arrogant he always thinks, "God won't hold me accountable; he doesn't care." | 4In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. |
He is secure at all times. He has no regard for your commands; he disdains all his enemies. | 5His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies. |
He says to himself, "I will never be upended, because I experience no calamity." | 6He says to himself, "Nothing will ever shake me." He swears, "No one will ever do me harm." |
His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words; his tongue injures and destroys. | 7His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. |
He waits in ambush near the villages; in hidden places he kills the innocent. His eyes look for some unfortunate victim. | 8He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims; |
He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket; he lies in ambush, waiting to catch the oppressed; he catches the oppressed by pulling in his net. | 9like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. |
His victims are crushed and beaten down; they are trapped in his sturdy nets. | 10His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. |
He says to himself, "God overlooks it; he does not pay attention; he never notices." | 11He says to himself, "God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees." |
Rise up, LORD! O God, strike him down! Do not forget the oppressed! | 12Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. |
Why does the wicked man reject God? He says to himself, "You will not hold me accountable." | 13Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? |
You have taken notice, for you always see one who inflicts pain and suffering. The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; you deliver the fatherless. | 14But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. |
Break the arm of the wicked and evil man! Hold him accountable for his wicked deeds, which he thought you would not discover. | 15Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out. |
The LORD rules forever! The nations are driven out of his land. | 16The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. |
LORD, you have heard the request of the oppressed; you make them feel secure because you listen to their prayer. | 17You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, |
You defend the fatherless and oppressed, so that mere mortals may no longer terrorize them. | 18defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. |
