Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. | 1Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. |
Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, | 2Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. |
for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. | 3For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. |
When Christ (who is your life) appears, then you too will be revealed in glory with him. | 4When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. |
So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion, evil desire, and greed which is idolatry. | 5Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. |
Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. | 6For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, |
You also lived your lives in this way at one time, when you used to live among them. | 7and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. |
But now, put off all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth. | 8But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. |
Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with its practices | 9Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, |
and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it. | 10and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him-- |
Here there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and in all. | 11a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all. |
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, | 12So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; |
bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if someone happens to have a complaint against anyone else. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also forgive others. | 13bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. |
And to all these virtues add love, which is the perfect bond. | 14Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. |
Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful. | 15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. |
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God. | 16Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. |
And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. | 17Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. |
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. | 18Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. |
Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. | 19Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. |
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing in the Lord. | 20Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord. |
Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they will not become disheartened. | 21Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart. |
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in every respect, not only when they are watching--like those who are strictly people-pleasers--but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord. | 22Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. |
Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people, | 23Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, |
because you know that you will receive your inheritance from the Lord as the reward. Serve the Lord Christ. | 24knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. |
For the one who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there are no exceptions. | 25For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. |
