Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.1After this, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
After he fasted forty days and forty nights he was famished.2After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he finally became hungry.
The tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread."3Then the tempter came. "Since you are the Son of God," he said, "tell these stones to become loaves of bread."
But he answered, "It is written, 'Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"4But he answered, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word coming out of the mouth of God.'"
Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the highest point of the temple,5Then the devil took him to the Holy City and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple.
and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you' and 'with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"6He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, because it is written, 'God will put his angels in charge of you,' and, 'With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'"
Jesus said to him, "Once again it is written: 'You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.'"7Jesus responded to him, "It is also written, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'"
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur.8Once more the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, along with their splendor.
And he said to him, "I will give you all these things if you throw yourself to the ground and worship me."9He told Jesus, "I will give you all these things if you will bow down and worship me!"
Then Jesus said to him, "Go away, Satan! For it is written: 'You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"10Then Jesus told him, "Go away, Satan! Because it is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"
Then the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to his needs. 11So the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to him.
Now when Jesus heard that John had been imprisoned, he went into Galilee.12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he went back to Galilee.
While in Galilee, he moved from Nazareth to make his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,13He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali,
so that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled: 14in order to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
"Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles--15"O Land of Zebulun and Land of Naphtali, on the road to the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the unbelievers!
the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, and on those who sit in the region and shadow of death a light has dawned." 16The people living in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land and shadow of death, a light has risen."
From that time Jesus began to preach this message: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." 17From then on, Jesus began to announce, "Repent, because the kingdom from heaven is near!"
As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).18While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen.
He said to them, "Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people."19"Follow me," he told them, "and I will make you fishers of people!"
They left their nets immediately and followed him.20So at once they left their nets and followed him.
Going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. Then he called them.21Going on from there he saw two other brothers—James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee repairing their nets. When he called them,
They immediately left the boat and their father and followed him. 22they immediately left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus went throughout all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of disease and sickness among the people.23Then he went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every illness among the people.
So a report about him spread throughout Syria. People brought to him all who suffered with various illnesses and afflictions, those who had seizures, paralytics, and those possessed by demons, and he healed them.24His fame spread throughout Syria, and people brought to him everyone who was sick—those afflicted with various diseases and pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralyzed—and he healed them.
And large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan River. 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from across the Jordan followed him.
