The prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah while he was writing down in a scroll the words that Jeremiah spoke to him. This happened in the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was ruling over Judah.1This is the word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch son of Neriah when he wrote these words on a scroll at Jeremiah's dictation in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:
"The LORD God of Israel has a message for you, Baruch.2"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch:
You have said, "I feel so hopeless! For the LORD has added sorrow to my suffering. I am worn out from groaning. I can't find any rest."'" 3 'You have said, "Woe is me, because the LORD has added misery to my pain! I am worn out with groaning and have found no rest."'
The LORD told Jeremiah, "Tell Baruch, 'The LORD says, "I am about to tear down what I have built and to uproot what I have planted. I will do this throughout the whole earth.4"This is what you are to say to him: 'This is what the LORD says: What I have built I am about to demolish, and what I have planted I am about to uproot--the whole land!
Are you looking for great things for yourself? Do not look for such things. For I, the LORD, affirm that I am about to bring disaster on all humanity. But I will allow you to escape with your life wherever you go."'" 5But as for you, do you seek great things for yourself? Stop seeking! For I am about to bring disaster on every living creature--this is the LORD's declaration-- 'but I will grant you your life like the spoils of war wherever you go.'"
