| 1For the music director; a psalm of David. O LORD, rescue me from wicked men! Protect me from violent men, | 1Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; preserve me from violent men, |
| 2who plan ways to harm me. All day long they stir up conflict. | 2who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually. |
| 3Their tongues wound like a serpent; a viper's venom is behind their lips. (Selah) | 3They make their tongue sharp as a serpent’s, and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah |
| 4O LORD, shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over. | 4Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet. |
| 5Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah) | 5The arrogant have hidden a trap for me, and with cords they have spread a net; beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah |
| 6I say to the LORD, "You are my God." O LORD, pay attention to my plea for mercy! | 6I say to the LORD, You are my God; give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD! |

| 9As for the heads of those who surround me--may the harm done by their lips overwhelm them! | 9As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them! |
| 10May he rain down fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. | 10Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise! |
| 11A slanderer will not endure on the earth; calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down. | 11Let not the slanderer be established in the land; let evil hunt down the violent man speedily! |
| 12I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor. | 12I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy. |
| 13Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name; the morally upright will live in your presence. | 13Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; the upright shall dwell in your presence. |
