For the music director; a psalm of David. O LORD, rescue me from wicked men! Protect me from violent men, 1Rescue me, LORD, from evil men. Keep me safe from violent men
who plan ways to harm me. All day long they stir up conflict. 2who plan evil in their hearts. They stir up wars all day long.
Their tongues wound like a serpent; a viper's venom is behind their lips. (Selah) 3They make their tongues as sharp as a snake's bite; viper's venom is under their lips. Selah
O LORD, shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over. 4Protect me, LORD, from the power of the wicked. Keep me safe from violent men who plan to make me stumble.
Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah) 5The proud hide a trap with ropes for me; they spread a net along the path and set snares for me. Selah
I say to the LORD, "You are my God." O LORD, pay attention to my plea for mercy! 6I say to the LORD, "You are my God." Listen, LORD, to my cry for help.
O sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. 7LORD, my Lord, my strong Savior, you shield my head on the day of battle.
O LORD, do not let the wicked have their way! Do not allow their plan to succeed when they attack! (Selah) 8LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked; do not let them achieve their goals. Otherwise, they will become proud. Selah
As for the heads of those who surround me--may the harm done by their lips overwhelm them! 9When those who surround me rise up, may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them.
May he rain down fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. 10Let hot coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into the abyss, never again to rise.
A slanderer will not endure on the earth; calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down. 11Do not let a slanderer stay in the land. Let evil relentlessly hunt down a violent man.
I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor. 12I know that the LORD upholds the just cause of the poor, justice for the needy.
Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name; the morally upright will live in your presence. 13Surely the righteous will praise your name; the upright will live in your presence.
