Deuteronomy 8
NET Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors.1“The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers.
Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.2And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD's mouth.3And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years.4Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.
Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, the LORD your God disciplines you.5Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you.
So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him.6So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills,7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills,
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey,8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,
a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper.9a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you. 10And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.11“Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,
When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses,12lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,
when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything,13and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,
be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery,14then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,
and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and15who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock,
fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you.16who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.
Be careful not to say, "My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth."17Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’
You must remember the LORD your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day.18You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
Now if you forget the LORD your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated.19And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.
Just like the nations the LORD is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him. 20Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.
