For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God; And do not hide Yourself from my supplication. | 1Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! |
Give heed to me and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted, | 2Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. |
Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the pressure of the wicked; For they bring down trouble upon me And in anger they bear a grudge against me. | 3My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. |
My heart is in anguish within me, And the terrors of death have fallen upon me. | 4My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. |
Fear and trembling come upon me, And horror has overwhelmed me. | 5Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. |
I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. | 6Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! |
"Behold, I would wander far away, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah. | 7I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude |
"I would hasten to my place of refuge From the stormy wind and tempest." | 8How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred. |
Confuse, O Lord, divide their tongues, For I have seen violence and strife in the city. | 9Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. |
Day and night they go around her upon her walls, And iniquity and mischief are in her midst. | 10Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. |
Destruction is in her midst; Oppression and deceit do not depart from her streets. | 11Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets. |
For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him. | 12It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. |
But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend; | 13Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. |
We who had sweet fellowship together Walked in the house of God in the throng. | 14What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. |
Let death come deceitfully upon them; Let them go down alive to Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst. | 15Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them. |
As for me, I shall call upon God, And the LORD will save me. | 16But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me. |
Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and murmur, And He will hear my voice. | 17Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. |
He will redeem my soul in peace from the battle which is against me, For they are many who strive with me. | 18He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. |
God will hear and answer them-- Even the one who sits enthroned from of old-- Selah. With whom there is no change, And who do not fear God. | 19God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. |
He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has violated his covenant. | 20As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. |
His speech was smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords. | 21His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! |
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. | 22Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. |
But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You. | 23But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me. |
