A Song of Ascents, of David. "Had it not been the LORD who was on our side," Let Israel now say, | 1A song of ascents, by David. "If the LORD had not been on our side"--let Israel say this!-- |
"Had it not been the LORD who was on our side When men rose up against us, | 2if the LORD had not been on our side, when men attacked us, |
Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their anger was kindled against us; | 3they would have swallowed us alive, when their anger raged against us. |
Then the waters would have engulfed us, The stream would have swept over our soul; | 4The water would have overpowered us; the current would have overwhelmed us. |
Then the raging waters would have swept over our soul." | 5The raging water would have overwhelmed us. |
Blessed be the LORD, Who has not given us to be torn by their teeth. | 6The LORD deserves praise, for he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth. |
Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the trapper; The snare is broken and we have escaped. | 7We escaped with our lives, like a bird from a hunter's snare. The snare broke, and we escaped. |
Our help is in the name of the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. | 8Our deliverer is the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth. |
