International Standard Version | New International Version |
First of all, then, I urge you to offer to God petitions, prayers, intercessions, and expressions of thanks for all people, | 1I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people-- |
for kings, and for everyone who has authority, so that we might lead a quiet and peaceful life with all godliness and dignity. | 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. |
This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, | 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, |
who wants all people to be saved and to come to know the truth fully. | 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. |
There is one God. There is also one mediator between God and human beings—a human, the Messiah Jesus. | 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, |
He gave himself as a ransom for everyone, the testimony at the proper time. | 6who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. |
For this reason I was appointed to be an announcer, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the gentiles. (I am telling you the truth. I am not lying.) | 7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I am not lying--and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. |
Therefore, I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without being angry or argumentative. | 8Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. |
Women, for their part, should display their beauty by dressing modestly and decently in appropriate clothes, not with elaborate hairstyles or by wearing gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, | 9I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, |
but through good actions. This is proper for women who claim to revere God. | 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. |
Let a woman learn with a quiet spirit, and submissively. | 11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. |
Moreover, in the area of teaching, I am not allowing a woman to instigate conflict toward a man. Instead, she is to remain calm. | 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. |
For Adam was formed first, then Eve, | 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. |
and it was not Adam who was deceived. It was the woman who was deceived and became disobedient, | 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. |
even though she will be saved through the birth of the Child, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, along with good judgment. | 15But women will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. |
